Title: Just how good is the mk5 GTI ?
Post by: club23 on July 01, 2013, 05:23:10 pm
Hey everyone, new to this forum and was just wanting to get a little info from the people who own a mk5 gti, on how good the car is.
I absolutely love the look of the car and can easily see it as my next purchase!

So basically, can you guys tell me some of the pros and cons about the car?
How reliable are they, what mpg can I expect ( driving sensibly ) how fast are they ....

Also, for a good one, how much am I looking at ?

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

They're good for what they are and what they do. At the end of the day it's just a golf with a great engine, stiffer lower suspension, bigger brakes, bodykit and interior cosmetic differences. In other words it's not a Porsche!

0-60 is around 7 secs
36mpg or so if cruising
Pretty reliable-a few issues-have a search. Don't buy one that's been ragged or not serviced regularly.

A good one - there are a couple of special editions, the Edition 30 & the Pirelli which command a premium. You could pay 14k or so for one of these!

Obviously no-one is going to tell you to avoid one like the plague on a gti forum! They do have a certain character though and make people smile when they drive one.

One major thing to look out for when buying a mk5 is the dreaded rust :(

...check the arches, boot release and sills. Most of the time it's covered by the 12 year corrosion warranty but they can be a**holes at times!

Cheers guys!

I wouldn't be able to afford the higher specs, so just the basic GTI would do. I am not really clued up on them, as you can probably tell, just looking to get a bit of info.
As high as I would go would probably be £8k, if I could get one lower then fantastic, I will have a look around and see what they are going for.

It seems to be exactly what I am looking for, good looking, fast and the mpg sounds good! Obviously would go waaay down when Im having fun :driver

Have a look in the 'cars for sale' section on this forum. You're more likely to get a well looked after one. :happy2:

Agreed. My mate bought a car off a site member here, that's how I found the site lol

It was 20 times the car any of the ones we looked at elsewhere and we looked at about 5 in total.

You will easily find a golf with a decent spec and mileage for £8k. If not cheaper. There are some really bargain prices on some gti's atm. I bought mine for 7.5k which was a steal for what it is. If you buy off here, generally they will have been looked after well and more often than not you'll be able to 'track' it's progress. Just double check everything.
The cars are reliable yet practical. They look lovely and my mates are jealous big time. My golf suits me down to the ground. I drive to work in it and can get 45 mpg, go see my mates, go on holiday and even had jolly round a track occassionally! Not many can say that. All in one. Their performance as you will no doubt find out is good. There are a few things to look for like rust as mentioned about and dare I say the DV valve! Ideally a rev. G one needs to be fitted so you don't get a lose in power.

Thats good that I can find one for that price, would prefer one with lower mileage so around £7-8k would be my best bet ?
When I buy though, I want it to be as near to stock as possible, so that I can 'make it my own'.
Its great that they are so much of an all rounder aswell!

I just cant wait to feel the power, going from a 1.4 to that will be something else.
And if its true that it is really fun to drive, then even better.

I never really thought about a golf until recently when I seen a nice red one, since then its all I want haha.
And yeah tortaruga, looks so damn sexy in red!

If I was you I would definitely buy a stock GTI... if you buy a modded car your buying someone else's problems. Unless you know the owner/ car and who carried out the work ;)

To give you an idea I bought a Tornado red 56' plate 2 years ago, with 38,000 miles and full VWSH for £8.9k... (£10k asking price) so you'll be able to take your pick of the bunch with an £8k budget!

^^^^ Completely agree, buy a standard car and go from there. £8k is a good budget but be warned if you hang around on here we will spend your ££££ modding that puppy.

Definatly buying one in red though!

Smart chap, you know it makes sense!

I see what you mean then, £8k should get me something pretty good!
I wouldn't want to mod it too much, just subtle things. I have been looking at some of the rides on here and gotten a few ideas.

I have not seen too much of what people have done to the interior, is that mainly because it comes with a pretty decent setup?

And yeah, as close to stock as I can find! Then I have a clean slate to do what I want.
Haha, yeah If I stay on here I will just get too many ideas, and end up spending loads on the car (not REALLY a bad thing, is it ? haha )

Famous last words!

I recently had a service done. I was told that my console bushes are starting to perish. I immediately interpreted that as:
"Time to buy a Whiteline Anti-Lift KIT"
On it's way now.

Before joining this forum I didn't even know such a thing existed!

The interior is pretty sorted anyway. Some people go for upgraded seats / audio etc...
Spending £££ on the interior doesn't make it go faster or handle better though

The interior is pretty good in a standard GTI.

If you hunt around (and wait) you may get a GTI with MFSW (Multi Function Steering Wheel), a Highline Display, a decent OEM (or after market) Headunit such as a RNS510 (the Sat Nav one) or RCD510.

If your after some subtle mods you can also add a Bluetooth kit, LED interior lighting, chrome tipped switches and all sorts of interior bits and bobs.

Also some red bbs centre caps as a cheap mod

Haha yeah, I say that now, but I will probably end up getting carried away with the mods!
And I really need to wise up on all the terms used here, I dont know half of the stuff you guys are talking about! Going to have to look it up!

I have a fetish for interior lighting haha! So I would definatly go down the lighting route!

Also, how do stock GTi's sound ? I would want mine to sound epic, just wondering what they sound like normal?

^^^^ Sounds ok but can certainly be improved upon.

My last k03 Turbo'd GTI had a standard TBE (Turbo Back Exhaust) and sounded more than adequate, had a Milltek Resonated system fitted and sounded way better. My current K04 Turbo'd Eddy sounded a bit deeper (in sound) with a standard TBE, it now has a BCS Sports Powervalve TBE fitted and sound pretty OEM while pottering around but when you put your foot down all hell's lot lose and it sounds awesome.

Yeah I would probably make it sound a bit better, I had a listen on youtube to the stock exhaust and would like something a little louder (although not too loud ).
Just had a listen as well to the Milltek and it is a lot more like what I am after!

Going to go look at some of the members rides (again)
Been looking at loans aswell haha! I could definatly afford to buy one, pretty sure running one wouldn't be a problem either! I will also have a few years NCB, so insurance shouldn't be too high (if it is high i will just save harder haha)

Also, what sort of mileage should I be looking for when buying?
