Title: Engine code help
Post by: Chris92 on July 07, 2013, 12:49:10 pm
In the book and under the carpet in the boot it has a a code BYP but on the timing belt cover its says BWA, just curious why this is? Is the BYP a gearbox code or engine?

Anybody??? I'm thinking the engine has been changed so I guess that means the mileage on the clock is different from what the engine has done.

Have read of this link

http://vag-codes.info/files/engines/vw-engines.pdf

It makes no mention of any engine code BYP!

In fact I don't recognise the code for either gearbox or transmittion.

You could be worrying over nothing.

Came across this site

http://vag-codes.info/

Again still nothing on that code - Where you getting the information from?

BWA is what I would of expected.

What year is you vehicle registered?

The car is a gti mk5 on a 07 reg. on the timing belt cover it's says BWA. But on the service book and under the carpet in the boot their is what kinda looks like a reciept suck down on the floor and in the book, they both have "eng.code/trans.code" then next to that it has BPY with no mention of BWA

Is it the first or last BYP or BPY?

Tried this
http://igorweb.org/equidec/default.aspx

And it showed nothing - you best post a picture of both service book and boot sticker and we'll try and help!

Hope it works and it ain't the best pic. This one is from the service book and it is the same as the one in the car boot.

BPY engines are meant for the US market...
In Europe we get the BWA version.

Well you learn something new all a time - strange about the book though and why it's got an American service book then?

Could it be a mistake by vw putting the wrong sticker in? Would they be able to shine any light on this if I ring them do you think

I haven't got round to asking vw but I will tomorrow because il be booking my car in for a cam belt. I asked the pervious owner as I bought it privite and they said they haven't had any new engine Put in. They bought the car off the original owner just when the warranty ran out so if it's had a engine replaced by the first owner vw must of fitted it i would of guessed, but if I remember you said the BPY was for the American market. Would you be worried about its saying BPY in the car but having a BWA engine fitted?

No, the engines are identical.

Not sure I understand what you mean? Can you explain. What I mean is on the service book and under carpet in the boot it says BPY but on the timing belt over it says BWA, that's what I was asking if you would be worried about this if it was your car.

I wouldn't be worried since the nuts & bolts side is correct,it's just the document side is a puzzle and that must have been done by VW  one assumes!

Still keen to know the answer to this one as the profile stickers are not normally wrong (from initial build)!
