Title: Extending your cars Warranty
Post by: iainalpine on August 17, 2009, 05:19:25 pm
Guys hello. I have reached that time in the cars life where i have had to get the MOT carried out which also means the warranty is about to run out. I have looked into the VW extended warranty cover and to me it looks not to bad. But the cost of this is £442! Now as a few of you no, like yourselfs i have modded the car in certain areas. So things like the suspension, exhaust and soon to be brakes are uprated so warranty will not cover them. In my mind im trying to figure out is it worth all that money to get cover for a DSG box and engine?
Im starting to think yes, but was wondering what others have done when they have got to this point.
Thoughts and ideas would be great guys.

Iain

Im not at that stage but with putting the extra pressure on the engine and gearbox I would go for it for piece of mind. Better than paying £2.5k for a new DSG gearbox.

What mileage is the car on?

just turned 36000 miles.

Im kinda thinking along those lines. Lots of cash if the box or engine does go wrong

£442 could be very cheap when you consider the risk.

My October '06 GTI with only 20k on the clock has had four separate failures (that I know about) before it's third birthday.

Trouble is, it's an import so only two years warranty. The dealer I bought it from a month ago gave me six months' insurance backed warranty, so most of my costs have been covered.

But I wish I was in your position

If you've got stage 2 on there, the dealers will sniff it out mate. If your dsg goes or if it means replacing an engine, Vw will checked a modded looking car to see if the ecu has been played with. You could look at it as paying 400 odd for nothing, if they turn round and say it's not covered. I'd personally not bother extending it

Most warranties exclude modified cars, check the small print.

Most warranty doesn't seem to be worth the paper its written on, so its worth checking aftermarket reviews on Google before making a decision.  My VW used car warranty is useless, so I'm considering some watertight cover.

I personally would just put the £450 into a high interest account each year then just spend it on the car if something goes. The engines are bullet proof. the only expensive item that is dodgy on the Mk 5 is the air con. Most DSG faults i have read about have been down to the mechatronics unit and they have all been at low mileage, as long as your DSG gets its scheduled oil change it will be fine.  :jumpmove:

I would also compare prices from "surf and protect" and warranty direct.

Ahhh the age old post.... A year ago I posted the very same. Could have paid £450 ish for a years cover... In that time I've had a 47p seat part break....there's still a couple of weeks to go to my real anniversary so it may still prove to be a very unwise decision..... I'll let you all know on 6th September!

I took the option of an extended warranty on mine. We bought it in June and its warranty expires at the end of this month. It hasnt been modded yet, but the air con has just failed and its a £1k job. Its being done tomorrow by the dealership. Peace of mind. All mods i will put on are reversible apart from the eventual remap.

Really not sure what to do. I have a bit of pull at the VW dealers, so wonder if that would help if something did go wrong and they would turn a blind eye to the changes. Suppose its still a gamble no matter what i do!!

Another thing to note is this, my extended warranty can be carried out at any VAT registered garage. It doesnt have to be the dealership.  :happy2:

If anything went wrong, just take it to a mod friendly VW specialist. VWR/Stealth etc. They will have to ask for authority before carrying out any work, and claim for it from the warranty agent. However, its a way around getting a modified car sorted out.

I'll be going with Tesco when mine runs out, seems to be one of the most comprehensive covers out there at the moment and a really good price  :happy2:
