Title: Headlamp Adjustment/Deflectors for driving in Europe
Post by: f1fan on July 09, 2013, 02:45:09 pm
I'm taking my GTi over to France in a couple of weeks time so thought about getting all the usual guff like triangles, hi-viz jackets etc all sorted out.  As it's the first time I've taken the GTi abroad I've not had to deal with adjusting the headlamps so I don't dazzle other cars.

Do the GTi lights need to be adjusted?  Are they Asymmetric or Symmetric lights?  i.e.  _ _/  or _ _

How have you guys dealt with this?

I started a similar thread a short while ago. Can't find the link at the mo but if I do I'll post it.
I decided to get some stick on beam deflectors - ebay, only a few quid. These are ones which are supposed NOT to reflect too much heat.
As it's unlikely I will do much if any nightime driving, I'm only going to stick them on if needed. The problem being that they can be a b****er to get off cleanly! It's difficult to scrape the plastic cover without damage.
I have heard that Isopropyl alchohol will dissolve the sticky without damage to the plastic. I'm going to try a hidden area tonight to see the effect. I'll post results.
Hope that helps a bit!

Just tested Isopropyl alcohol on a hidden area of the head lamp front and no effect. It also cleared some well stuck on beam deflector remains from my neighbours car. Result!

Thanks for the link, I did a search for 'abroad' and didnt find it before I posted.

I have standard Halogens so will go for the stickers.

Where did you buy the Isopropyl from?

I scrounged a small bottle of Isopropyl from work!
But you can get it on ebay quite cheap. It's useful stuff for fine cleaning and degreasing small parts.
