I am not a pro. This should allow the firmware to be downgraded:

To get to the software downgrade option you will need the "secret menu" enabled on the RNS.

Hold down the "SETUP" button. You will get the following menus:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fp510%2Fharveycn%2FIMAG0501_zps4a0872cd.jpg&hash=ea79bc74c51c1ba1690a986b5f2e7a868b2ab99f)
Standard setup menu. Keep holding...

Radio Service Mode. Keep holding...

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fp510%2Fharveycn%2FIMAG0504_zpsabcb1089.jpg&hash=c175110a7347a5a19e5cf59802764a13e393c444)
Testmode. Let go

Select "System" (bottom of the list) and you will get this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fp510%2Fharveycn%2FIMAG0506_zps033d1cbc.jpg&hash=3becbc70329b81897ae1250b09aee25170f0caf1)

In all honesty I don't know what happens when you press "Enable SW Downgrade", never pressed it before.

Good luck.  :happy2:

Recently had the same thing happen to mine, how long did the firmware take too do? Should be about 50 minutes to update. If it was quicker it's not done it correctly. I would suggest the firmware has not taken correctly and requires to be done again, perhaps download from a different site?

3810 is a version that repartitions your HDD - so you lose all data, including maps, POIs, music.

Think I found a modded 3810a version that worked great on my A unit, also loaded to another members car. Try finding it in my-gti and slowly burn it to a CD then try again?

Edit: the file is called 3810a_noru.rar or click this http://depositfiles.com/files/gbtlf3s2i

As skard says,  burn at slowest speed. Will have less chances of errors

yep I got this fw...this is what started my troubles.

ive managed to downgrade now ans I don't have anything installed now. its just a radio and a nav that keeps asking for map disc.
whats the best option for firmware now...do I go up in stages or go straight for the private dance.
Thanks

According to my-gti.com 3810 is the key upgrade as it does the re-partitioning work to go up higher i.e 4020 (not sure what the advantage of 4020 is).
They also say 1100 to 3810 should be fine.

http://www.my-gti.com/3093/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-3810-3814-3816-3818 (http://www.my-gti.com/3093/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-3810-3814-3816-3818)

You could try 2700 then 3810 but personally I would try and limit the number of times you upgrade due to any potential major problems.

when you go to download the fw 3810 there are 5 or 6 parts which all have there own links are they all the same do I need all of them or one of them.
I have download a group of files like this earlier and it would only unzip part one and none of the rest.
Thanks

I have the 4020 on my A and it's as far as I'll take it, but you need 3810 first to reconfigure the HDD.

You'll need to reload maps from DVD as they'll have been wiped, however cos of the repartitioning from 3810, you'll not lose them in the future.

Might be worth using a laser cleaner on your stereo, that link I put up definitely worked on the cars I did. You'll get there!

Just checking, are you using a CD and not a DVD for firmware? I did.

I downgraded last night and then installed 3810a nora and it went ok first time...with an old sh*tty blank cd from about 10 years ago.
now that it went on first time and fully with no interruption's or mistakes I know its installed properly. the problem is that my hdd is greyed out and if I use the sd card and go to extras there is no option to copy from sd card, there was before.
can anyone enlighten me on this problem.
Thanks

I believe 7920 maps are same as 7918 but with integrated speed cams, either of those work fine with that firmware.

I think you somehow need to reset your RNS, have you tried holding in the upper buttons? Have you tried a different SD card too?

I will try different card as well...let you know what happens.

Had a think...is your SD card quite sizeable? If so check it hasn't been formatted by default in NTFS format, make sure it is FAT or FAT32 so the stereo can see what is on it.

it can see what's on it coz it plays from it.
the problem is there is no copy to hdd option like I had before I done the update also the dvd don't work either.
I've tried a cd it plays that but when I go to extras there is no copy to hdd function.

has the HDD not been greyed out before? Could be a hard drive failure

It worked when I had it, it had music on it from the fella I bought it off (not bad as it goes and its all lost)
when I put the sd card in it worked fine and when I went into extras it said copy to hdd.
my poi's are greyed out to.
my dvd don't work and when im on the media screen it only has option for cd where it used to say cd/dvd.
Thanks

hmm, Im not too sure then. I think if you put in an ordinary CD it will say Cd, it you put dvd in then it says DVD.

Where abouts are you based?

I phoned Yarmouth ed and it was a matter of going to SD and picking the album or track and instead of clicking on the track name I had to click the box to the right and then it gave the option of copy.

Lol! Dont worry at least you sorted it now. .

With fw 4020 you might have problems with the 7920 maps showing poi. Thats what happened to me so I went back to 3800.

Im not too far from you (Leyton) so if you have any issues in future you can give me a shout.

I did try the 7918 and 7920 on the fw3810 but had no joy that's why I kept trying to put fw4020 on for.. looks like it didn't help.
ed said maybe its the disc im using.

bugjam at the weekend,
I think I might go up on the ponce and harass some V dubbers for a quick go of a original map..i bet one of them has one in the boot or there cd collection..lol
