Title: stone chips!!
Post by: NEWEY on August 18, 2009, 01:08:47 pm
Hi all im just wondering how your bonnets are looking on your golfs and how many miles have you done? my car is 12 months old next month (15k) does some motorway miles but mostly town driving. The bonnet seems to have quite a few chips coming. its starting to worry me a bit as i intend to keep the car long term and i dread to think what the bonnet is going to look like in 3/4 years time
JPC did you get a successful claim ? if people could post pictures that would be even better.

thanks :)

No stone chips on my bonnet, but it isn't a normal bonnet

The front splitter is a different kettle of fish though

Hi mate, I got the front bumper done under warranty yep.

The bonnet has quite a few chips on there now, but its just wear and tear. i dont think VW would do anything about it.

Ive filled about 10 chips in

ye i would say i have about 10-15 chips too. ive thought about getting them done but if there just going to come back is there any point?? the front bumper hasnt got one stone chip on it. which is a bit weird i think :chicken:
Title: Re: stone chips!!
Post by: JPC on August 18, 2009, 01:26:48 pm
that is quite strange. the bumper takes the brunt of the chips.

its one of those things you just have to live with.

If i had a mk2 garage queen, it would piss me off. But I do 30k/year in my car year easily. Its for driving and its bound to get stone chips. If your looking for them, you will find them and they will annoy, so dont look for them.

The Reason i got the front bumper done was because there was an unholy amount on just one side, it was more than wear and tear.

And...cant you see stone chips here?

Obviously those bonnet bra's will help (as long as you don't leave them on too long - Underwear should be regularly changed!), but personally I think they look absolutely ghastly . But that's only my opinion - ETTO etc.

I think they look more suitable on something like this, or bigger : -

Mine is an 08 and has about 4 chips.  When it was detailed Autoperfection touched them up for me so they are not really noticable.  Really just have to live with them really otherwise it will drive you nuts.

I did pick up a horrible one on the side where the road had not long been done and somone was overtaking a bike which caused the stone to bounce along the side

The warranty defiently excludes them even if you take the paint  protection scheme

....This is it - If you enjoy driving it's inevitable you'll pick up stone chips even from other road users.

The ones that bother me are on my windscreen.

I was recently at a VeeDub meet and this happened to a mate's Mk1 GTI - It was a pebble the size of a penny which a car flicked up as it left the car park and it wasn't even accelerating away fast : -

Mines 05, 50k, bonnet isnt too bad, though has a few chips, the bumper though is peppered too, though i would rather shove wasps up my arse than have a bonnet bra on my car, they look plain nasty, if i did anything it would be using clear film solutions, but they dont look great in the sun either,

I think he had premature paint failure or something so the paint hadn't been properly applied in the factory, which he managed to prove.

Carbon bonnet as I mentioned back in August last year......they just bounce off. No chips on the bonnet, no need to re-spray and saves weight!

You can only really get away without spraying the bonnet on a silver, white or black car though

For the stone chips I get on the front of the car I had some paint matched up and I use that when I need to. :happy2:

What you can also do is start a new thread in this General section titled something like "GB feeler - etc" to see how many might be interested before a proper GB is arranged via SteveP. You'll probably need to know the amount of interest first in order to agree a unit price with the seller/supplier.

Got some of this stuff a couple of weeks ago and finally got round to using it today.  I am pretty impressed.  Done a few chips on the bonnet and one scratch on the wing.  The scratch has now virtually gone (it wasn't very deep to start with), and I reckon I can hide the chips a bit better with another going over as I don't think I applied enough paint or I wiped it too much.  I'll attempt to get some before and after shots next time I give it a go.

I find it much easier than using the touch up sticks and it really is as easy as it says!

I've been looking to sort some chips on the Cupra and didn't fancy taking sand paper to my car so I've just ordered from these guys, apparently very similar to, if not the same as drcolorchip and located in this country.

and theres a group buy with discount code to be found here.

Graphite Blue colour code is LC5F (it's on a sticker under the mat in the boot)

The Dr Colorchip system looks very similar to the Chipex system but without a squeegee! I've tried a few more chips but couldn't get a result I was happy with.  I think I must be spreading it too thin as I definitely put more paint on this time.  I'll have another go tomorrow and get some pics up as I took some before shots this time.

The chips look better, with he chipex kit, but are no where near perfect! Not sure it was worth the £42 it cost to be honest, I'll get some pics up at the weekend, no laptop at the minute.
