Title: Wheels under warranty - where do I stand
Post by: Lynsey on August 20, 2009, 09:48:16 am
Noticed the GT's last wash at the weekend that 2 of my wheels are starting to go - the dreaded issue with diamond cut wheels!!  Almost spot on timing, 4 months before my warranty is due to run out!

So... there's only 2 wheels that're going so far, where do I stand with VW - if I kick off enough, will they give me a new set or just the 2?

I don't want to go a few months into no warranty time only for the other 2 to follow suit!  :scared:

My dealer was pretty cool about it when I turned up asking about the same thing on my Monza II's about 6 months before my warranty was due to run out and replaced all 4 wheels and centre caps even though 1 of them was fine, they just said the other one will probably start going so we'll just replace all 4! I was chuffed to bits

I had no issue getting my 3 of my monza II's replaced with only 3weeks of warranty left.  At the same time I also had the cambelt + tensioner, water pump and timing chain replaced again all covered, but thats another story.

....

Could be tricky getting all 4 replaced under warranty. It's not just kerbing but also stone chip damage which can start the worm gradually spreading - In fact, anything which breaks the clear lacquer seal and allows moisture in.

As Edition30 says, it's essential that your original car came from an approved UK VW dealer and with the same wheels originally. I have direct experience of such problems.

Yes they are the charleston alloys that're optional extras with the GT's - I've had the car since day 1 from factory order!

It can't be stone chip damage either cos it's starting from the wheel centres - the centre caps are also fecked so will need to get these replaced too!

lol this is correct - never kerbed a wheel in my life!  I have kerb paranoia and stay miles away from them lol

....Stone chips can fly and damage anywhere. I actually witnessed this one happening : -

Keep us posted please, Lynsey - my Charlestons are just shy of two years old (13k) and look perfect - although I knew when I specced them that they were likely to go the way of some Monza 18's, having a similar diamond cut finish.

Reugular washing with Meguiars, dry off with microfibe towel and 3 monthly 3 coat Poorboys is what I've been doing and like you I take a bus to the kerb

My previous March '06 Steel Grey GTI which went to Yan on here still has its original wheels as far as I know and I suspect Yan is as fastidious with them as I was; however there seems to be no hard and fast rule with the worm - other than physical damage to the lacquer?

My car's a keeper and if the worm appears after the  warranty expires, I reckon they'd look pretty smart in single colour anthracite?

Good luck on getting yours replaced  :happy2:
