Title: Crap Speakers
Post by: Oli on August 20, 2009, 02:20:00 pm
After BOSE x 2, and Logic 7 in my last three cars, the standard system in the Golf is sh1te, and thats a compliment.  I have no want to change the headunit, as I like the factory look,  but I have just found that any volume other than quiet it is just so shrilly(if that makes sense).  Just wanting to upgrade the speakers, has anyone done this, and is it worth it, and what have you used - Oh and I do not want a sub in the boot.

Cheers in advance :happy2:

ive got focal polyglass and hertz in mine, one of the first things i had done to rid myself of the factory attempt

and you can upgrade the head unit and still stay VAG, unless you already have something like the rns510 already

I have Hertz "Hi-energy" components up front and coax's in the rear. If you really are into your sounds you need a sub and amp too to balance up the range otherwise it will still sound a little hollow in the bass.
I also have an Audison amp powering the front components and the 10" Hertz sub in the rear arch. :happy2:

I've done exactly what you don't want to do Oli....changed the head unit for double din Kenwood nav 7200 and drive a small 10" sub in the boot via a small Rockford Fosgate amp (which is easily removable as I have 2 kids). The standard interior speakers remain oem. I've always put decent sound systems into my cars and replaced speakers but I have been amazed how this set up sounds. Perhaps it could sound even better with upgraded interior speakers but it's now more than acceptable - even without the sub, bass is quite strong and clarity good
I fear that you could replace the speakers but keep crap sound. As I understand it, the oem head units 'clip' the output which means as the volume is increased, the bass is reduced to avoid blowing speakers.
Rainbow make some good oem replacement speakers at reasonable cost - straight forward swap type. I have heard of these recommended by a couple of other people with Golfs.

Which head unit do you have?

When I upgraded from the rcd300 (and I presume the RCD500 is the same) to a MFD2 the difference in sound quality was immense.  Not as good as uprated speakers but still a phenomenal difference.

I have the 10 speakers and its really not that bad. My sound system in my old car cost thousands and was unreal. Im not disappointed, then again the engine noise is nicer than before and i do just turn the stereo off most of the time  :signLOL:

Have a look at the Blaupunkt THA-555 Amp, this is meant to make a big difference to the standard speakers and can drive an amp for the added bass  :happy2:

I have this as well, maybe makes the difference.  If its the RCD300/500 though they really are the weakest point in the set up.

Same for me, got a new RCD 510 and have the 10 speaker set up, its not too bad at all and i had a full high end alpine system in my last car to compare with sub etc...

Indeed, i have the rcd 510, the above amp powering the standard 10 vw speakers and a 12 inch sub and I've never heard a better sounding system :happy2:

another plus from me  for the THA system its a great improvement over standard and keeps the standard Sat nav/ Stereo.

Would the THA-555 be any good for use with components or should I go for a more conventional amp?

I was disappointed with the quality of the RCD300 when I picked my car up (not that the stereo is a massive issue).

Put my RNS510 in yesterday though and the difference is considerable - much more clarity and sounds a lot more natural.  In fact its good enough for me know to forget about spending money upgrading the speakers for some time.

Would have been nice to have the B&O system out of my Audi though

i think it's rainbow who do a special set of speakers designed to fit the mk5 without need for baffles etc. bloody expensive though.

Hadn't realised that mate - I had the 14 speaker B&O upgrade with an amp  - the way it was worded it indicated that all the speakers were B&O??  At least the 6 front speakers on mine were trimmed with chrome rings with the B&O logo on them.  None of the rears did have though come to think of it??

Did sound damn good though  :happy2:

I take it you have to drill out the speakers - recollect someone mentioning they're riveted.  How do you secure the new ones?

Probably with one of those leaf nut type things and a self tapping screw. I always put a bit of trim tape between speaker adaptor and inner door skin to help with vibrations

I've had RCD300 experience in both 3 door & 5 door Golfs.
The sound in the 5 door models is much better than the 3 door models. Maybe just speaker positioning but I wondered if there were larger speakers in the 5 door rear doors?
