I'm sad to say guys but after 8 years my gti has gone to a new home. Due to our other car being a diesel, the gti wasn't getting used so I decided it was time to move on.
I'm in no rush to replace as I cycle to work most days but I will be replacing once I find the right car. Anyone got any suggestions??
Criteria; must be 5 door, must be diesel as it will be used to take some miles off the other halfs 6 month old cooper sd which has already passed 12,000 miles. Really only german cars appeal to us.
We test drove a 2012 a3 black edition yesterday which ticked most of the boxes. It was only the 140 2.0 tdi and was a bit slow compared to the 2.0 tdi in the mini so I'm thinking a 170 is a must. Quite fancy s tronic but can't find one to try (anyone tried one with a diesel). Weirdly, the steering had almost no feel which I found strange with it basically being a golf and the gti having wonderful steering feel?
Also shocked auto lights, wipers, dimming mirrors, cruise are all options
Anyone changed to an a3 and happy with the change. Any other suggestions? 1 series, 3 series, a4 etc? I'm pretty open to most german cars
Cheers,
Ryan

Only issue I have with the A3 is that the interior is now about 10 years old.
Still a nice car but I think my money would be on a GTD with a few options if you can find one.

GTD for me as well

Yea it is getting on a bit but still seemed a classy place to sit. I love the mk7 gtd but it's out of budget and I can't generate any desire towards a mk6, always preferred the mk5 golf so that's not really an option. Plus i'd like xenons which seem to pretty rare on the mk6

gti is what I would go for

123d?

So your buying another diesel for 1 commute? Sod that matey, get something fun. :happy2:
But if its a must then A 'Rocco would have my attention, surely 3 doors is a compromise here. :pomppomp:

Keep the Mini for the mileage bashing... and buy something fun!

You can get 4 adults in a Rocco :happy2:

I found the steering pretty good on mine. Which is also an S-Tronic, and i find that its plenty quick enough really (as a commuter). Picks up pace quite well.

Get a fun to drive car mate, golfR or if you had to get a diesel why not try a 335d

There were 3 of us in it which probably didn't help with performance but there was absolutely no feedback or weight in the steering. Wasn't the end of the world but imagine wouldn't be great for confidence pushing on. I've noticed reading the reviews it's a common trait of audis. That said, the ride certainly wasn't as firm as they make out. Was pretty comfy tbf
Black edition is def top of the options still although I may keep my cash and lease a mk7 gtd which are £227 a month at the moment. Getting a bit sick of hunting already

Friend of mine has a 335d and rarely sees above 30mpg so doesn't tick the cheap to run box. Doing a bit of research on the 320d engine brings up loads of threads of people struggling to improve on 45mpg. I could do 40mpg in the gti!!
-
335d do over 40 easy on a run but around yeah they are bit bad but it's a 300bhp derv with a 6 pot mtr so I think that mpg is good for the car

123d?
+1 or GTD. Or Toyota GT86, I know it's petrol but I've heard they're not too juicy and an absolute hoot to drive.

I didn't see above 45mpg in my 123d either. Stunning motor though.

Went with the a3 black edition in the end. Pick it up friday. 170 tdi sport back in metallic black. Was very impressed tbh, looking forward to detailing it now

Looks good I had one of these back to back for a week with the mk7 TDI and I preferred the audi, I thought it was a better drive allover.
