Title: Just put a hole in my radiator...help!
Post by: Rob. on August 06, 2013, 10:14:23 pm
Something just gone a bit wonky with my Jetta

Looks like the engine cover broke loose while I was driving, as I heard a flapping sound and then a smash. It's broken the grip section off of the oil filler cap, which I think has then broken 2 vanes on the radiator fan, which in turn has bust a hole in the rad  So it's loosing coolant...not catastrophically, but fairly quickly.

I managed to limp it home (under the watch of Green Flag), but now I'm stuck.

How many hours labour am I looking at for a rad change?

Thanks.

It's not difficult to swap it, I could do it in a hour or 2 so a garage well within the hour.

Well...they called to say it's somewhere over £600.

Thats £55/hr labour rate, and £200 for a fan and £100 for the rad, plus coolant and some other bits and bobs.

No option but to pay it, as I was towed there, and need the car back.

I bought a second hand fan from ebay  for 40 quid and the sellers  a garage in hounslow installed it for 40 quid and I never had a problem since
