Title: No money?
Post by: Tortaruga on August 15, 2013, 12:23:20 am
Paying for petrol with a card today and I wondered what would happen if your card was declined because you hadn't enough cash in your account? This must have happened to someone? It's not as if they could siphon your tank.

They take some details off you and request you to pay within a day or so. Happened to me once when I left home without my wallet!

I'd just get another card out. Figure out what happened to my cash and pay the credit card off ASAP. However, I check my accounts daily. And have £1000 reserve on top of a £2250 overdraft, so it's potentially unlikely. Unless huge fraud had taken place, but as I check my accounts daily.........

I once filled my car and when I went in to pay, the card was refused.  I knew I had cash and could even view the balance on screen on the cashpoint at the petrol station but couldn't withdraw any. Turns out the whole LINK network had gone down and had to fill out the form. Was still made to feel like a criminal.

My friend, a sparky who earns great money yet has the budgeting skills of a fish often uses the pay at pump function at supermarkets, apparently as long as you have a pound as cleared funds in your account it will clear the initial check and allow you to preceed in filling up, albeit somewhat cheeky my friend will have usually been paid by the time the money is taken out of his account, three days later or so.

I filled up and had left my card at home, had to leave my details and come back! It was about 40 miles to home, had to then drive back to the petrol station then back home again :signLOL:

Wont make that mistake again!

Did it once a long time ago, left my spare wheel with them and came back next day to pick it up and pay.

Happened to me once when I was at uni. I called my parents who paid with their card over the phone.

Filled up at a local garage after a tough day at work, then heard my phone go off in my car. Got in the car, answered the call, then drove home after I'd hung up.

I only remembered I'd forgot to pay when the police arrived at my door two hours later

Happened to me years ago, the petrol I bought (and couldn't pay for) was probably worth more than the car at the time. Went back later with the monies.

I'm not allowed my own money (I'm irresponsible "apparently"), wifey gives me hand outs (which is nice as I earn it ) so I'm never without cash. Never owned a credit card. Seems an odd thing to say these days.

 :happy2:

Yep, first car and just started first job but had not been paid yet. Had to fill out a form. the guy behind the counter was a right patronising git.

Thankfully no so far. I quickly check I have my wallet/card when stepping out of the house, and before I step out of the car at a pump.

On one occasion, I'd managed to drop my debit card by the pump and couldn't find it when I went to pay. Thankfully another customer walking in spotted it and handed it to me.

One another occasion, I bought some sweeties along with the fuel. Pulled out my card to pay. One assistant was showing a newbie how to work the till and card system. They only charged me for the sweeties and I didn't notice. Checked my bank statement a few days later and tried to work out the odd payment. Checked the receipt and figured out what had happened. Drove back the next day to pay. They were very grateful that i turned up.
