Title: Re: LED Side Lights - Anyone tried them??

The one's installed are standard LED's and have added a resistor to get around the bulb check on the sidelights.

The puddle lights don't have a bulb check that switches them off or shows the dash bulb out message in the same way so don't require the resistor (but do still show a bulb out warning in fault codes).

I would like to see the results with these bulbs are the first SMD type LED's I tried weren't very bright
Title: Re: LED Side Lights - Anyone tried them??
Post by: JPC on August 27, 2009, 09:29:12 am
i would have said SMDs werent really the best solution for the sidelights.

SMDs (although smaller ones) are used to light up your phone screen, and your dash and highline.

The type with four Leds in the 501 shaped plug with a resistor are probably the best bet

So, you guys with the aftermarket sidelights - When do you drive with just sidelights?

Do you use them as Daylight Running Lights?

....OEM sidelights will be ineffective as DRL's but the LED sidelights would be more effective but I don't know if they would meet the forthcoming legal requirements - Doubtful unless you switch them differently and their candella strength may not fall within the legal range - I don't know.

Either way, I expect that most people here simply want these LED sidelights just for eye-candy.

To the contrary, OEM sidelights are used (legally) as DRLs in a number of countries including the US/NorAm and Scandinavia. The reason LEDs are stipulated for the forthcoming EU legislation (on new vehicles) in 2011 is so that certain countries which did not want to have mandatory DRLs - the UK - will accept their introduction.
Certain lower-spec Audis sold today without the spiff LED DRLs use their normal sidelights as DRL as well.

As to that second point, I too think a large part of it is the eye-candy thing.

The MK6 uses sidelights as DRL's, as do some of the 'lower spec' Audi A3's and 4's.

....As always

I'm saying that whether oem sidelights become legal or not in the UK as DRL's, I'm doubtful they would meet some other EC country rules. But more importantly than the rules, they simply don't measure up to the strength and hence effectiveness on the road as dedicated DRL's such as on Audi's (and my Hella DRL's).

I think that LED sidelights are a great idea though - I personally just don't need them as I very rarely use just sidelights as I have auto-switching Hella's.

....Yes, and the Mk6 'sidelights' are considerably bigger and more effective as DRL's than on the Mk5.

The oem Mk5 sidelights are a waste of time imo, so LED version is a good upgrade.

Well mine is perhaps not what you'd call a lower spec Audi however I have DRL's as a factory option - Oh and guess what they are the sidelights, so clearly they already meet UK legislation for type approval.

....Does yours have the rather stylish rows of LED's which the upper model Audi's have as DRL's?

Although the UK may class many sidelights as DRL's (it virtually has to in order to be seen to be complying with EC directives), the fact remains that most sidelights are not as effective in real-world road conditions when directly compared to the dedicated DRL's which comply with EC rules.

There's a difference between an EC officially recognised DRL and a light which is simply used as a daylight running light. Any lights on during daylight may be described by some as daylight running lights.

So, an upgrade to the LED side lights of this topic has got to be a welcome mod.

Although the UK may class many sidelights as DRL's (it virtually has to in order to be seen to be complying with EC directives), the fact remains that most sidelights are not as effective in real-world road conditions when directly compared to the dedicated DRL's which comply with EC rules.

Pish posh, the Americans and the Scandis have been using halogen sidelights for years in a highly effective manner. They are as effective in real-world road conditions as the DRLs stipulated by the EU.
The LEDs-as-sidelights condition was brought about mostly by the UK - the UK did not want the introduction of DRLs as they put a greater load on the alternator and increase fuel consumption (never mind the fact that every yahoo has the radio/satnav/ipod/kettle plugged into the vehicle's 12V bus).

Quote
There's a difference between an EC officially recognised DRL and a light which is simply used as a daylight running light. Any lights on during daylight may be described by some as daylight running lights.

So, an upgrade to the LED side lights of this topic has got to be a welcome mod.

You're showing your age Red! There's no "EC" in terms of legislation any more anymore :P and, to make it even more clear - the EU law on DRLs for new vehicles is less about output of beam, so on and so forth, but more to do with that they will always be on whenever the vehicle is running.
The use of LEDs as DRLs does not increase visibility (as LEDs as tailights do) but rather reduce running costs by decreasing the load on the vehicle's 12V bus.

The original EU legislation actually wanted dipped beams on at all times - as practiced by Finland, Iceland, and certain other artic-circle countries - but the UK government successfully argued against that claiming that DRLs would be able to perform a similar function with reduced fuel consumption.

And to get even more anal, DRL doesn't stand for "Daylight Running Light", it stands for "Daytime Running Light" :)

OK - I've *potentially* bought the wrong bulbs (didn't think to check about the "bulb-out" error!!! D'Oh!!

I've bought THESE (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290136689632&ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3D290136689632%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1)

My understanding is that I'll need to add a resistor to each bulb to get around the error.

How do I do this? I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, so the DIY route isn't an issue  :happy2:

Thanks in advance

Dan

^^^ Yep these are the ones that need a resistor across the two wires to increase the current being drawn so the bulb out feature isn;t triggered.

I personally use the ali shielded resistors on the sidelights as these dissipate the heat better than the wire wound ones  :happy2:

Just a quick update:

The Ebay ones have been relisted, in fact all of the W5W/T10/501 he sells will fit our Golfs

Fitted mine today in <10 mins.  (I have small hands!)

No 'bulb out' warning.  :happy2:

Not sure they're goers as DRL alternatives though!
