Title: DSG woes.................... now all better
Post by: SteveP on August 26, 2009, 05:54:40 pm
Like a few on here my DSG gearbox has progressively been getting worse over the last few months.

The symptoms where :-

These issues have all been caused by a faulty mechatronics unit (the gearbox ECU), according to my dealership this is becoming quiet common having replaced 6 others over the past month (across various VW cars not just Golfs).  :surprised:

After about a three week wait for the part mine was replaced today and I am very pleased to say it has fixed the problems and the car is now a smooth and responsive as it was to start with.

So a big thumbs up the Wayside Towcester for impeccable service on this :happy2:

This is one job that I am very very glad was still under warranty as the part alone is in the region of £1100  :scared: plus the ECU lives inside the DSG box so requires an oil change as part of the job. Mine took around 5 hours work all in including the test drive.

So if your a DSG owner and get any of the symptoms above get them checked out before your warranty runs out as this will be progressively worse and isn't a cheap fix.

Can a symptom of this be:

Stick it into drive and take foot off brake before it bites. Car then lurches forward on acceleration.

?

If so, mine is doing it, so might get it booked in.

It feels like you have awful clutch control like if you were getting used to a biting point on a clutch for one symptom Deako.

Yeah, think thats the best way of describing it. Think it could mean mine is on the way out? Its only done 21700 miles.  :scared:

When pulling away it felt like the car had kangaroo petrol in it. I think the worst case was reversing up a gradual incline but since it was changed the car feels brand new.

Yeah, I had it on my A3 diseasel and so know what to expect if it happened again (hope it doesn't!!).

Another, more extreme symptom was one which the A3 suffered from...sudden stall after setting off - not good as it happened twice setting off from junctions, once onto a roundabout and several times at traffic lights, all in the space of two weeks. This was on top of the kangaroo juice effect and uncontrollable initial surges in reverse and setting off :fighting:

I eventually took it back to Audi after the roundabout incident and demanded it was fixed as the next time it could have been fatal!.....They gave me a 3.2ltr A3 and fixed it. Liked the A3, but it drank petrol for England

My DSG is playing up as well, its a nightmare getting it in the garage sometimes after a spirited drive or warm days.
But i am to scared to take it to the dealers. (https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftomashandmilly%2FDaft_stuff%2Fbijtop8vingers.gif&hash=72800c9de2865009f4dfc4e46c7e56320b88d8c9)

all this does not sound like fair wear and tear...these issues are most likely down to component failure somewhere in the module.  So, its a quality/ reliability issue as a result of a bad batch of components or a design flaw....

frustrating that the customer is expect to fork out thousands of pounds for VW's screw up.

That statement is from VW Group of America so before dealers over here will do anything VW in the Fatherland will need to publish a similar confirmation of the issue.

I would recommend a call to VW UK customer services as a first port of call.

It's 07 models on, only too. Now that's either comforting, having a my06, or upsetting. They've clearly tracked the issue to a batch of faulty components which thanks to their traceability process targets a specific production date. Bit of a bummer if your mechatronics goes on earlier cars..... We still need confirmation that this will apply to Europe too (something tells me it may not) which will be less to do with the fault being at risk on our cars but more to do with our weak legal position compared to the states.....Sorry I'm cynical I know, you'd think that vw on releasing this to the states would have open it to Europe next, it may be phased due to budgets ..... Lets see how it develops (fingers crossed).

So I wasn't alone... Just that my car was for 6 months out of warranty... I managed to get 70% warranty on the new transmition, still had to pay 30% and all work... 2.000 Pounds...  :sad1:

Have a read of the above links and contact VW UK and ask for a full refund.  The article (American) says that

"Volkswagen intends to not only provide alternative transportation for owners while their vehicle is in for service but to also reimburse owners who have had the issue previously fixed.

The company will also extend the transmission warranty of all vehicles involved to 10-years, 100,000 miles. The extended warranty will also be transferable."

If they can do it in America then VW have surely now set a precedence.

Thanks to the yanks sue happy culture they seem to get a lot more satisfaction from their stealer with matters like this than we do in Europe.  IIRC with the mk4 all yankies managed to get their window clips fixed FOC outside the warranty period whereas VW UK still officially deny there was an issue.  Despite releasing a repair kit...

I'm sure there was a similar story with MAF's but I could be mistaken on that.

If I was reading it right, in Europe if you are on long life servicing, your warranty is extended every time you get it done.  There is a sticker in my finacee's polo servicing book saying this doesn't apply in the UK.  Shafted we are... (I know I know we don't like longlife for the GTI but still)

question for stevep regarding this,

dropped my car off this morning for its 2nd service and asked them to have a look at the dsg issue as had a few similar issues as you were experiencing

i phoned them today to check up on the status and they said they are having to speak with VW hq to see if they will cover it due to the modifications I have had done.

yourself with similar mod's obviously did not have any issues, did they question your mods at all?

thanks

^^^ Agreed it isn't right that this part of the gearbox which isn't affected by any other mods won't always be covered under the warranty and is widely reported to be a weak link.

My main point I have was I had reported the issue before I had gone mod crazy and VW had looked at it and reduced the oil level in the gearbox as they believed it had been slightly over filled in the factory

Because this was "on file" and it had made no difference once they started getting others in then I believe that helped my case.

I know I am not the only modified car that has been able to get this done under warranty
