Title: What car wax do you use?
Post by: Homer on August 25, 2013, 07:22:56 pm
Quite a lot about and not sure what one to opt for. There are these ones that simply get sprayed on or others that need to be actually waxed on. What ones are best and what ones do you use? Thanks

I use Colinite 476s  :happy2:

Lasts about 9months before it needs another coat. Water bubbles up really well and it's not difficult to apply .

I normally use Dodo juice Orange Crush which is excellent for the money but have recently had a coat of swissvax shield which is just sublime!

If you want a good long-lasting finish the collinite mentioned above is great stuff - used to get around 6 months decent beading and a nice shine on my old A4 cab which was driven daily and parked outside at all times.

I like the finish from Zymol Glasur on dark cars, but it does not last as long.

Never found a spray wax that is of much use, although I do use one as a quick detailer occasionally.

I like Scholl Rock wax. Behaves rather differently from other waxes in the sense that it sheets, rather than beads.

Durability is excellent I'd say, equalling Collinite and gives a finish to equal if not better Victoria Red Concours wax.

Not cheap at around £80 a pot but this should last you forever. Will be investing in a pot when my sample tin runs out....

Have often used Collinate 476 or p21s, but at the minute im not using a wax as such.

Im giving Carpro Hydro a go, so far pretty impressed.

Have you tried 915 or 476s ? Think 915 is best for dark cars and 476s is better for light coloured cars

Ive tried 845 on my DPB R32 last winter, and was great, very good durability and more "user friendly" then its 476s counter part.

Poorboys Natty Blue Wax - Cheap, Easy to clean off and can use in the sun.

dodo juice supernatural hybrid wax....

applied by bare hands, left to cure for approx. 1hr, then start to buff it off... I like it, it has a sealer in it also, which can only be good thing...

gives good beading, lasts until next applied, in a few months, but topped up in between every wash with a quick detailer...

so hard to say how good it really is or lasts... but I like it...

Just got another tub recently...

Wax makes absolutely no difference to the finish of a car.

Dodo Juice waxes contain a sort of "dye" as part of the wax which can colour the surface but this wears off in a matter of days / first bit of rain.

There's only ever one wax you need to use which is Collinite 476s. It blows everything out of the water and there is nothing for the ease of use that can beat.

I agree with this ...polish gives you shine wax protects it ......one word about collinite ..don't do what I did and coat the whole car ..and stand back and admire ...took me two hrs to get off ...just do one pannel at a time and don't let it dry ...tbh it's the best wax I've used for silver ..I've used before PB natty paste and Dodo juice hard candy and this beats it

Yes leave it around 5-10 minutes tops.

If you want a really nice easy to apply wax, you can use G3 Super Resin Wax in the liquid form. Use a microfibre applicator pad, you can go around the whole car and it comes off so easily! Gives a decent 2-3 months of protection as well and smells really sweet.

Honestly Collinite is about 13-16 quid, you get a HUGE tin that can easily do 50 cars.

Assuming 3 months protection as a worst case, if you didn't prep the surface properly or whatever - You're looking at 4 applications per year, The tin would last you 12 years!
Use it on everything, although avoid using it on black textured trims as it does stain them slightly - You can remove the over application with a glass cleaner or diluted IPA.

Everyone bangs on about how a wax gives a nice finish but the art of detailing is in the polishing... put wax on a turd and it'll still look like a turd.

Finally someone speaks sense....

"Yeah XXXXXX wax give a really deep shine on my XXXXX coloured car"

BS.... absolute nonsense!! Its detailers way of validating their existence.  :signLOL:

Just some people like having a more expensive wax on their car.
You wouldn't use Turtlewax on a Porsche 911, so you pay a little more for Swisswax BOS. Some cheap waxes can absolutely dull the finish and some can SLIGHTLY enhance. But I'm talking a 2 or 3% difference, and certainly wouldn't take a sh*tter to a minter. If your car is covered in swirls it will still be covered in swirls (ergo looking crap)

There are some better and some worse waxes.
But I do not agree at all with anyone who says that a certain colour of car benefits from a certain wax.  Chemical manufactures, mainly Dodo and Chemical Guys but Megs do it as well, manufacture waxes for different coloured cars, lighter cars often having a lighter coloured wax and nice versa. People THINK it makes a difference but really it doesn't make any difference at all. They all work just as well on each other

Like I said Dodo Juice waxes, some of which contain a colouring agent which can bring out depth by seemingly adding a "tinge" but this requires 3-5 coats of wax and does not last more than a week.
Maybe ideal for a show but as I said you'd need to apply 4 layers or so and at at least 20-40 minutes a layer.. you're talking nearly 3 hours work.
