Title: Random drive door lock issue
Post by: rich83 on August 27, 2013, 10:11:02 pm
Hi chaps(esses)

Ive been having a problem of late where the driver door wont open with the remote central locking. I have to put the key in to unlock it.

Any ideas? New door lock unit needed?

Thanks
Rich

Does anything else on the door work? Windows? Mirror adjustment? Buttons illuminate?
Could be a broken wire leading from car to door or maybe a faulty door controller.

I fixed my brothers and it was a broken wire behind the rubber sheath between car and door.

Other doors unlock from the remote locking OK?

yes... only drivers door effected

Also when i unlock it with the fob, if i open the px door and try and open the driver door, i cant. Its like its not lifting the dead lock or something!

Should show in a scan  -  have you noticed if the door LED flashing rate has changed?

If when locking it flashes fast - typically new module required!

Almost certainly a new door lock control module. It might go away for a while-mine does it in hot weather so it doesn't happen often. It shows up as an intermittent failure on vcds.

Ill check some old scans to see if anything is mentioned.

2 Faults Found:
00096 - Drivers Door Central Locking (Safe) Motor (V161)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit - Intermittent
00928 - Locking Module for Central Locking; Front Driver Side (F220)
            008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

Thats from an old log... funny how its not caused any problems until recently

How much is a new module... and is it easy to fit?

They're about £150.

There is a guide in the troubleshooting section which you are supposedly moderating .

Have you had any other electrical problems?  I think I remember reading you had a new TB fitted (my current problem) only say this because I've had the drivers switches and motor problems, had to swap them out... Does your alarm work? Had to swap that out too and the wiper motor, and the cruise control... Hmm.

There a big thread on Audizine that seems to suggest a lot of issues are caused by bad wiring/earthing or ECU.

I had the TB issue.. but apart from that no other issues. (apart from an annoyingly crackly radio reception)

I have two gone ..drivers door and rear passengers door ...but both are working again in the warm weather ...don't mind drivers so much as I can put key in but rear door is a pain as it gets stuck shut completely

I would get it sorted while you can still get the door off. Virtually impossible to do without butchering the door skin if the door stops shut. Ask Stealthwolf. He had a nightmare with his.

^^^Sage advice.

I got a new module on ebay for £50 so it's worth a look. There are plenty of second hand ones, but it wouldn't be worth risking all the effort of changing one out only to put another knackered one in.

Had one done on my .:R32 under warranty. Yes it's a door skin off job but the dealers turned it around fairly swiftly.

Trouble with the back doors Sir? Try the front entrance for a change.  :surprised:

His rear door had failed to open for around 6 months.  Went for an MOT the morning it came to me to fix it and when in for MOT it just opened.  Swapped the bugger over and all was well.  Month later the front passenger side was playing up!

Nice straightforward job to do.

As alex has said, I've had two locks play up. The second one was easy, was still in the intermittent phase and I was on the phone to alex less than 24 hours after it started playing up. The first one was a PITA, affected the rear driver's side door. It hacked me off to the point where I told Alex I was ready for him to cut through the door skin. By a miraculous fate, it sorted itself out (maybe the car heard me?).

Get it sorted whilst it's working. Complete PITA if it's permanently screwed up.

It's not when it's the drivers door as you can use the key blade. Mine was playing up during the hot spell, but is back to normal again.
