I shall try cut a long story short...

I bought my Golf back on boxing day last year, a completely standard TDI sport 6 spd. FSH with a few bodywork issues including rusty front wings and some scrapes here and there for £4500.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2FF2574094-7B7F-4FD3-AD8E-AC76693C431D-1041-000000F86C3D5488_zps73345659.jpg&hash=0b75dc23b10257fc535ce0e0cf0c8be8d93748e1)
Firstly I took her to my cousins body shop to get the front bumper smoothed and re-sprayed, the following day I fitted JOM coilovers.

De-wipered with a glass blanker from overseas ( can't remember the company name)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2F17DA7991-0ACD-4797-82A0-4E8349987C13-1041-000000F847A81AA4_zps5c4b9cce.jpg&hash=820ad974e3c1689e61b77de1ffd70e7a135e1277)
I then got a friends tinting company to matte black wrap the roof and wing mirrors.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2FAF21679E-BC94-4A38-B1E3-5140A6785921-3322-000002C4B6438F2E_zpse0acb31e.jpg&hash=b59ed6d78ad32ab8c9f609bc98601d6f5ea2a6ff)
New wheels were up next along with a GTI rear lower bumper and GTI style exhaust tip mufflerectomy.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2FA858C316-B496-4854-A138-BAAA36AC13D5-4124-00000347197EA009_zps0d7e57d0.jpg&hash=88c1a44176fd6378f03d776b4a5516304d3cd7e6)

My knackered old discs and pads were on show more than ever now with the new wheels so I opted for drilled and grooved mtec brakes all round (for show only, this car doesn't go fast enough to need them)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2Fnull_zps30347682.jpg&hash=594d673c9ffb612ba0ff23db7c4ae5c0dbc610cd)

GTI side skirts were next, purely because I think they make the car look wider/lower with out touching the suspension
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2Fnull_zpsea977c5b.jpg&hash=8ab2c9d070f522d5bffd669a68f3a1ff7a4f5f26)
I also retro-fitted some fog lights in, having to make the harness myself and buying a OEM switch with the fog light attachment. This is because I got bored very quickly of my smoothed bumper, and found a reflex silver GT front bumper on eBay for a reasonable price.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fstuart_gt%2FOV55EZT%2Fnull_zps3bd48835.jpg&hash=b665b1e2f53805899dcccfd016c5a1b06528e200)
After going to a few shows, the air suspension bug got me hard. So it had to be done! I went for the airlift autopilot V2. Unfortunately because mine isn't a GTI, I have 50mm front hubs instead of the GTI's 55mm, and airlift only make 55mm front struts. Luckily there was a way round this by fitting MK5 top mounts on to MK4 front airbag struts. This was done for me prior to sale so I didn't have any hassle. Then was on to fitting it. with a couple of mates we had all the install done including boot build and chassis notch with in a week. We had a hiccup with a faulty rear bag, but luckily that got changed straight away under warranty.

I was getting annoyed about the fact I couldn't go as low as I wanted because of tyres touching the arches all round. I had bought 2 new wings a few months prior and decided it was time to get all the bodywork up together. I spoke to a guy I deal with a lot through work at Beenham bodyshop, and he suggested as well as getting the wings on and other issues sorted, to get all the arches pulled. I could have just bought smaller tyres, but she is a daily driver and I have a small family to think about also! So in the end I had both front wings fitted, rolled, and pulled, rear arches pulled by roughly 15mm each side, rear bumper resprayed and both sides of the car resprayed. While she was in the bodyshop I thought I'd get the front end completely finished by fitting GTI xenon headlight.
That is pretty much where I am with the car, also fitted a GTI steering wheel from a top guy on the forum called Dave J. So this is how she is right now.

All comments welcome, good or bad... Thanks for reading  :happy2:

Also a shameless plug, but I'm on Instagram where there's a lot more pictures of updates on my car, username stu_nc88. I'm useless with build threads but I'm hoping to keep this one up, as this forum has helped me a great deal over the year!

looks good mate very similar to my car atm

only thing is it doesn't look very low it may just be the pics but I'm that height on coilovers

one thing i would suggest is getting some r32 or led rear lights to get rid of the pinky stock ones  :happy2:

What's the ride like on air compared to your coilovers?

A bit stiffer than my JOM's, but it gets softer the higher PSI you run the bags at. Aside for the fact my arb had to be removed it still handles pretty well!

Great work. But really , how come that can't go lower? it's on air ride , rims should be under  :drinking:
Title: Re: My MK5 TDI... A long 9 months. Picture Heavy!
Post by: stuart-88 on September 05, 2013, 09:02:11 am
It can go lower :-) the rears have another 10psi or so left in them in that last pic. But I could do with shorter shocks tbh. My rear wheels will never go under the arch though because of my offset. Any lower and the freshly painted arch will bang on the lip of the wheel.

The fronts have 20psi left in them in the last pic, the tyres disappear and sit up in the arch, I need to get a proper picture done, all my pictures are of it parked up and spur of the moment!

Been a while since I've updated this, mainly because I'm either busy woking on it, or ...family life.

Air ride removed, new wheels, new coilovers, roof racks, interior trim painted, new fog lights to name a few things! I'll let a couple of pictures do some talking it's easier :-)

Not really tbh. I have an armrest on its way to me from a guy on here, Need some 10mm spacers on the rear. I'm sure other things will pop up though over time! Just want to try actually enjoy it now! I've lost interest a bit since helping a mate build a drag XR2, my enthusiasm has shifted from mine on to that!

Has your mate got the Caddy now then?

The car looks awesome, I just had some BBS alloys identical to those put on my car a fortnight ago haha

When you changed the fascia to the silver one did you just respray the old one or buy a new pre-painted one.  If you sprayed the same one where did you get the paint, I was looking to do the same thing to mine, I just want to make sure the colour match is spot on.

Thanks, I've had a few sets of wheels now but haven't been as happy with any of them as I have with these! I had the fascia and trim panels sent off to be sprayed by a friend, so the paint would have been mixed up (reflex silver as they're body coloured) by a paint suppliers. To buy a can of paint from a paint shop is usually about £10-£15 mark though which should be plenty!

Looking really good what a transformation

Great work

Few reasons, but mainly I just wasn't enjoying it as much as I was before. Took the fun out of it for me! The relief I had once it was gone said it all for me.

Then again Jay had his a couple of months before me, and has never looked back. Each to their own I guess!

Fitted an arm rest today, one of those things I should have done a while ago that's for sure!

Also thought I'd add a picture of my stealth(ish) boot build I did a couple of months ago, really happy with how it turned out. Plenty of boot space left too which is handy.

Cheers . Yeah roof bars aren't to everyone's taste as I've discovered haha. The only thing I don't like is the god awful wind noise, I'd love a Thule wind deflector but seems only the U.S sell them.

Yeah no worries call me when ever, if I don't answer I'll call back as soon as I can mate.

No, a massive pain in the a$$ if I'm honest, though it only took an about hour.

So I took a trip up to darkside over a month ago. It made 114hp standard which was pretty cool. Had it remapped and it made 143hp. Made such a big difference but I got pretty used to it very quickly unfortunately! Now in the process of saving to go for a gtb1756vk turbo kit. I would go bigger but budget wise it's much cheaper to just go for the ARL injectors. Any bigger turbo and I'll be needing bigger nozzles. I've already got some ARL inectors and hopefully within the next month I'll be ordering an S3 intercooler and hard pipe boost kit.

I fitted 312mm GTI brakes/hubs a couple of weeks ago thanks to xjay1337's help of sourcing some! They were desperately needed!

All what Jay said, plus you'll need 50-55mm hub adapters, you can buy from dpm performance for about £30 made by JOM.

How did you fit the boost gauge and wire it? I want one lol

You still got the roof bars and deflector?
Title: Re: Reflex silver TDI - Darkside remap
Post by: stuart-88 on April 29, 2015, 09:37:28 pm
Boost gauge was pretty simple, boost pipe came from my EGR delete pipe (will differ on your petrol). Then a wire to go to you dash cluster dimmer feed, another to an earth. What ever you do don't go for the steering cowling mount like mine, the squeaking from the steering wheel when turning literally makes me want to set fire to the car  :fighting:!! There's one you can buy for the O/S heater vent.

Yeah I still have the wind deflector and bars. Keeping hold of them for now, I was thinking of breaking the car when I tried selling them but changed my mind!

Car has been mostly sat up gathering dust and pollen particles as always. Fitted an ASH filter and pipework a month or so ago, and a new headunit as I wanted to move away from the OEM+ car specific one for future reasons.
