Title: Tiguan owners?
Post by: skard on September 11, 2013, 11:43:59 am
Hey

Anyone currently owning or have previously owned a Tiguan?

Been looking at them lately as we have our first baby on the way. The wife has an Altea at the minute which she likes, but we live 900ft up and get some bad, prolonged weather in winter, so fancy something with a bit more clearance and Haldex especially as she is due in January (before anyone mentions it, I know it isn't an offroader!).

It is only 2" wider and 6" longer than the Altea so looks are deceptive.

What I am thinking of is practicality - is the boot usable for baby stuff? What is real life MPG?

Don't fancy a PD engine but see some 170s at a fair price, it looks like VW made them when the mk5 was out of production and they had loads of parts lying leftover??
Have read the 140 in awd is sluggish, but whatever I get will be mapped anyway.

Appreciate any opinions

We had one for a short time, it was a 140PD with full cream heated leather etc. etc. however we didn't have it too long because it had a monumental electrical fault that meant we returned it to the dealer (I'm almost certain this was a problem with that car rather than the Tiguan  model per se) OH wasn't confident with it, so bought something else, but in the time we had it///

I loved the driving position, not too high or rolly into the corners, it felt fairly perky from low revs, didn't much like the gearbox compared to the Mk5 GTI one though, felt sloppy... loved the cabin and beige heated leather really makes a difference, esp. with the pano sunroof we had, road noise is fairly subdued, we had the 18s better ride than the GTI with 18s, brakes felt as strong as the GTI on inital bite at least... its not a car you really want to test to its limits, eGremelins aside I'd be more than happy to store precious cargo in it mate.

Sorry I can't give more info about winter traction, etc. but I'm almost certain with some winter boots it would do extremely well mate; as the GTI and decent winters has yet to fail me on anything but ride clearance!

The wife has had one for nearly three years now, although not the 4wd version.

Great car, we regularly get 50+mpg but in all honesty the boot isn't great. It's pretty shallow and seems to fill very quickly. She had a Jetta prior to this and we used to get loads more in that. Much easier with baby seats for loading/unloading and the high driving position is great.

I quite fancy one to (secretly)

I'd save for a newer model with the CR TDI engines, as the Pd is a troublesome lump in both 140 &170 guises.  :happy2:

Thanks guys.
Seen 20+ of them today, can't be a bad car?

Think they'd go well in snow with the right rubber (like any car) as my only issue in the mk5's has been clearance too.
The boot space is the biggest drawback I think, though we don't load the car too often.

Also want to avoid another PD engine, had a BKD before and also a BXE now, both are known for their catastrophic issues.

Being honest, I want a car that is a nice departure from what we have so I can keep the Eddy  :happy2: the Altea and mk5 are too similar space wise, if I get an Avant or Tiguan then we have a choice.

Cheers
