how to make your own 90mm custom intake
before I even got the k1 I had been looking at the tuning aspect, and realising these cars are bloody expensive, im not the type to pay £400 for an intake, no matter how nice it looks,
so heres your shopping list:
1x70>90mm silicone hose
2x90mm 90degree silicone hoses
1xmetre 90mm alloy pipe
5x80>100 jubilee clips
1x60>80 jubilee clips
Metal rod
Air filter of choice
Tools:
Air saw
Dremel/air grinder
Sanding wheel
Heres how to do it:
The scary bit is cutting your engine cover, once you have this in hand you’ll see how and were to cut, you basically need the maf pipe, don’t forget take the maf sensor out before doing any cutting as they are fragile!!!! You have been warned
You want to get the oval maf pipe to the stage were the coupler fits on,
Next you need a piece of alloy pipe 10.5” long, fit this into the coupler and then onto one of the elbows,
The next pipe is 6.5” long and has the other elbow and filter on it (I chose a ramair filter which can flow over 400bhp)
I then made a couple of brackets out of the steel bar, to hold everything in place, and cut my engine cover to suit,
Heres how it all looks now

double post :signLOL:
-
Looks good can you post a pic when you fit it on the car
-
:congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
Very good matey, I like the thoughts that you made your own, I had played on the idea for awhile.
Went with the revo one in the end...
:happy2:
Did you do a before dyno run to test your craftsmanship out after?
-
Didn't get a chance to log, it's been pouring down all day :(
-
Oh sorry when I fist looked at this only two pics came up
-
I edited it bud. Had a nightmare with Flickr upload
-
Looks good,
I was of the same opinion with the price of intakes so i bought one off ebay for £50 and fitted a better filter on.
-
How much did it cost you in the end?
-
any logs yet? i sold my neuspeed because it made that horrible whining sound on acceleration, does this do the same?
-
Very impressive mate
Did you have to cut down any of the silicone pipes to fit?
Cheers.
-
Looks very good
How much did it end up costing
-
Cost about £112 all in
-
that looks very very nice, think I will be looking on ebay for some silicone hoses.
-
Ash hoses sell everything bar the filter to make the kit.
-
Could I have some more info on what you used to make the brackets please.
-
just 1" mild steel bud, so it can be bent easy then primed and painted black, :drinking:
-
Thanks. one more question though, What did you mount the rear bracket to?
-
the engine cover bung holds it in place :)
-
Awsome, Thanks. I am going to give this a go but will be using a itg enclosed filter box.
Might take me a while but i put some pics up when I'm done. :happy2:
-
Great idea! I've ordered all the parts for this and will attempt to fit on my edition 30, i'll post some pics when done. Mine came to £90 with Ram air filter.
-
Do you know some part number of this filter you have used?
-
Im pretty sure it was this one mate -

I made them an offer of £40 and they accepted :happy2:
Here's mine fitted -

Just got to make some brackets to secure the pipework and finish modifying the engine cover and paint it.
-
Pretty big  They have accepted £40 too.

Any videos of what this sounds like Jake? Really considering it, Id love it too sound along the lines of an itg system?
-
They're not that loud to be honest. Mine does suck a little on boost and dumps back through the filter. I haven't got a video though sorry mate.
-
Awesome! Will be looking at this for the edition when the time comes :happy2:
-
what diameter is the turbo pipe, just thinking about getting a silicone hose from the turbo and not having to butcher the maf housing so I can reuse the engine cover if I need to.
-
Not sure sorry. I just got a damaged engine cover off e-bay and cut it up for the bits i needed
-
Ok so I have built mine but decided to make an enclosed version.
Here is a close up of the maf housing cut out.

That looks smart, I found my old bmc cda from the mk4 the other day so I'll be using that much like you've done! :)

How much was the ma f pipe. When I made the original they didn't do it.

£66+VAT so £79.99, reducers are about £20-£30. Really good intake just been mapped stage 2 with it

Brilliant write up :)
couldn't agree more on the not wanting to spend £400 on a bit of bent tube and a filter :stupid:
-
Can you flow too much air for the maf to deal with?
If not my names on one of these again

Filters are rated to air flow, the ram air one i had is rated to 400bhp,
the rcm one will be a fortune,
you can buy green air filters or bmc which the lcr mk1 guys used but they will restrict the flow higher up the rev range,
the car will only take as much air as it can
-
Yeah got a few already buddy
Yes I know there rated but think this is on a 850 hp subi but seen them on 350 hp scoobs and all the way inbetween once the cars maf less
So all I wanted to know was if vw mags can handle high flow or do they go pop like the subi aquivalent ?
-
Cost £70 plus £57
-
Thinking of making one off these intakes, but was wondering if anyone has had good results with them?
-
Never measured the results but i made one like this last month, cost about £115 all in and probably took 3 hours from start to finish... depends what you're after i guess, i just wanted to help it breath a little better with some sort of noise.
Plus i'm a tight @rse :)
-
I have ramair filter brandnew that was from their mk5 gti kit. If anyone is making one. Think its 70mm though but the actual airfilter is massive bigger than neuspeed i have.
Will be up forsale soon.
-
ill be making another very shortly

Wat sizes do they do then in been looking for a group a but cant find one big enough
-
Where's everyone getting the 90mm pipe from? I've got no idea where to even look lol. Those RCM filters sound awesome btw my old man has one on his 370bhp scooby and they're loud!!
-
It comes from ash along with the hose buddy
started mine today

Great thread.
Did anyone test the intake? Rolling road or other logging?
What were the results?
Cheers
-
Can anyone post close ups of brackets they've used to support the pipework?
