Guys,
When composing an oil change on a MK5, is the oil drainage spout tool mandatory, or can you simply place a bucket underneath and let it sap out? Previously in the past on other vehicles I've done this and it works a treat, however I'm coming up to my first oil change after 3 months on my 06 plate GTI and don't want to be caught out 25% of the way through.
If you can get away without it, are there any other spanners/tools required other than the standard stuff?
I have the FAQ PDF for doing the whole thing, although it doesn't cover either of the above points.
Appreciate any tips.

use an old washing up bowl to catch the oil (i do ) but you ll need a 32 mm (i think ) socket to remove the filter housing :happy2:

make sure your socket is a good fit too, the filter bowl is plastic so would be easy to round off the nut part :smiley:

to drain the oil from the filter housing is easy. there is a special tool or you can just take the cover off the bottom of the housing and u will see a small orange/ yellow part, u can use a medium sized flat blade screwdriver to push it up and to one side which lets the oil drain. when it stops just flick it with the flat blade and it drops back into its seat, then from the filter housing with out making a mess.

I know it seems a stupid question, but the way the stealers drain the sump is by inserting a drainage tube via the dipstick tube and sucking it out. Not via a sump plug. Health and Safety innit..
I think this is the question the OP actually had rather than how to drain the filter housing...

i dont think vw dealers do this , at least mine dont :surprised:

Well yeah more or less, more so whether I can drain it without that tool. I knew there'd be a sump release of some sort but whether I could manually un-clip or release it. Looks like the answers yes :smiley:

I have to admit I've never seen them do an oil change, but thats the official VW way according to the workshop manual :happy2:

There used to be one of these suction machines at our local Morrisons (Supermarket)!!!!
Never used it, but thought the idea was quite strange. They did sell a full range of oils too
