Title: Comfortably Lowering Mk5 GTi
Post by: jakex181 on September 18, 2013, 09:24:15 am
Hi Guys,

Id like to lower my GTi to for looks mainly but obviously i want to keep the handling similar or better. I really like how the car rides and its really comfortable, how can i go about lowering the car and keeping the ride quality? Spring or coilovers? If springs do i needs shocks aswell? Id be looking to go around 40mm lower i think.

Also how much would it be roughly to get fitted and will this include realignment of the wheels, are there any issues i might face with lowering the car such as needing different droplinks or similar.

Thanks for any help.

I think... lowest springs will drop you by is 30mm H+R/Eibachs you don't need shocks.

only issues will be rubbing

AP do some 20mm lowering springs, which are pretty much the same as the early -20mm VWR springs (though the new VWR springs seem to be made by eibach).

Supposedly ride very well too.

Id like to go lower than 20mm, so the wheels just sit in the arches

I had H&R springs on the ed30 from the APS groupbuy.. Spot on with the lowering & improved the handling, match them with a set of arbs & u have a winner..

I put the Bilstein B12 kit on mine (-30mm) and it's very comfy, improves the handling a lot

 BUT

If you want your tyres anyway near your arch, you need to get coil overs......Simples! :jumpmove:

Thanks for all the replies, am I right in saying that any coilovers are going to make the ride much more harsh?

They can be stiffer but I would not say coilovers are harsh.
I did 20k+ a year in my old TDI and never once got out of a long journey feeling worn out.
My disabled mother who drives a 2004 Rav 4 said mine was more comfortable..

I ran -35mm H&R springs for 12 months on my GTI. No rubbing at all, unless 5 adults in the car over only the steepest speed bumps, and TBH it was only a gently scrape on the under-tray.

Ride quality was perfect, a little harder than stock, but IMHO exactly how the GTI should ride from the factory

Interested in the H&R springs but have also found Eibach Sportline which ive seen people say that they lower the car more, is this true? has anyone got any pictures with these springs fitted or experience with them. Im more interested in springs than coilovers mainly due to price and not wanting the car "Slammed"

Springs are a waste of money in my opinion.
I had Eibach Sportline springs on my TDI before I changed to coilovers.

Not really low in my opinion - you have a lot lower you can go before you run into any problems.

this is mine on eibach springs, standard shocks. (pretty level part of the drive)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi872.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab286%2Ftrs888%2FSAM_1523a_zps30d0c134.jpg&hash=94c46275edda611424159afa1295384e0831392a)

If you want that height with comfort (practically OEM) then id go for them.

no issues rubbing with 5 people in the car.

heard good things about H&R springs too.

i wanted to go lower so changed to bilstien B14 coilovers which though maybe 1mm lower  :ashamed: ride was harder but still not uncomfortable.

then recently changed to H&R ultra lows, so current height is

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi872.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab286%2Ftrs888%2Fnull_zps291a2f1c.jpg&hash=86bc989bf03480b8c47f72a8cb135c51fa68d447)

now the driving comfort has gone almost back to Stock but the ride height is lower. Im sitting at that height as i rub and catch the front arches and archliner if i go any lower as my arches arent rolled.

these supposedly stiffen up the springs when hard cornering (works!!) and overall im very happy and content with the way the ride comfort and ride height is.

Hope that helps you bud!
