got some new alloys, and they have different et one pair et 35 and one pair is et.
which ones should i put the front and which should i put on the rear. at the moment i put et35 on the front and et40 on the rear. is this the best way.

Opposite way round definitely!! The rear axle is approximately 10mm narrower so the lower offset wheels (that stick out more) will fit better at the back.
What width are the wheels and what tyres do you have fitted? Any arch scraping? Photos?

I'll get the sizes tomorrow with some photos and the tyres I got on are 225/40/18 all round. No arch scraping yet.

Almost any tyre and wheel will fit onto the Golf if it is high enough up and the police don't stop you for the tyre sticking out past the wings.
Legally your tyres need to fit under the arches. For handling, having a Golf with 3 or 4 inches arch clearance isn't good. If your arches are an inch or 2 above the wheel you will scrape the wheels if you have more than 225/40/18 tyres on 8 inch wheels. Especially if you are running less than the minimum recommended ET45 (front at least).

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll stick to the current size I got in which is 225/40/18 to avoid arch scraping.
