Hi
So i have a fairly quick mk5 . 340 bhp 515 nm, big brakes etc
last week at the ring after lap 3 , 2nd 3rd and 4th are sounding like a expensive box straight cut !!
Not good so stopped using it and got a swift hire car with a friend ( mega fun !! , perhaps more fun than mine )
After leaving it to cool down 3rd and 4th on overrun are sounding normal again , but second is still whining
Should i try putting some better gear oil in it , or is it time for a strip down and new bearings time and reset all the backlash
Box has done 41K and has had a diff fitted at VWracing UK
Cheers

DSG or manual?
If the whing noise remains after coll down most likely there there's damage to the gearbox.
Obviously 340 hp + 515 Nm + track related heat means serious gearbox wear.
On DSG I'd go for the bigger T5 Multivan oil cooler. On a manual, I'd consider retrofitting an
oil cooler as well. Do this before looking for different gear oil.

Sounds almost like there's no or little oil in the box, either that of the oil-water heat exchanger has sh*t itself and turned your oil to mayo.
Get it back over carefully and have it checked.

Its a manual box , will drop the oil out and see what it looks like at some point
Drove it again the other day really sensible for about 50 odd miles and no funny noises , gave it full boost up a very long hill so several mins of max torque
Got to top of the hill and drive nice and slow in the 30 zone and found the noise that i had at the ring had come back , get it home let it cool down for several hours and all fine again

Any update on this thread?
Manual boxes are pretty good on these normally!
