Title: Mechatronic unit question
Post by: George118 on September 28, 2013, 10:23:17 pm
Just a quick question hopefully someone can answer!

If the mech unit on a dsg has already been replaced early on in its life, will it likely need doing again after say 5 years 50k?
Or was it a design fault that's rectified with a replacement?

Cheers

I would be interested to know a bit more about this.

Mine was replaced around 3 years ago (under the previous owner) but i am definately showing signs of a problem again.

Wondering if VW will be nice to me if its under 3 years...  :scared:

Mine was replaced and came under warranty. They said it would be covered until the end of my warranty period, but i argued about all VW parts come with a 2 year warranty so surely that would apply.

Outside of this period, with abit of arguing at your dealer and VW i would expect to get it changed again. :happy2:

I think the parts warranty is covered from the original purchase/replacement date.
Subsequent replacements are not given FURTHER warranty.

On the one side surely if you were to buy it you'd get a warranty? So perhaps VW are cheating their customers.
However on the other side I'm pretty sure it's global industry standard not to give in effect never ending warranties...

So worst case, if i had to buy the mech unit myself, where can they be sourced from apart from VW? Seen a few guides on how to change them and reckon i could tackle it!

I've read ecutesting.com are fairly reliable and cheap. £200ish iirc

Hmm interesting, thanks! Might be worth dropping them a mail. I wonder if anyone on here has used them?

The fault they describe on the website isnt the fault i am experiencing though

Thanks again!

When they repair your old unit do they itermise the components replaced - seems to easy for them to fudge their way out of a claim!

What are the symptoms of this by the way mate?

My symptoms:

-Proper clunky when cold
-Occasionally when manouvering with a hot engine the box will almost stall the engine in both R and D
-Warm engine take off is slightly kangaroo'ish
-If i let the box downshift automatically into 2nd when slowing down its like someone has jabbed the brakes

Upshifts @ any rpm are pretty faultless!

I did a basic settings around 6 months ago when it first showed any sign of a problem. It helped a little but within 2/3 weeks it was back to the normal problems.

At a similar time (circa 52K) i had a DSG service at Awesome and i think it was around 27K when the mech unit was replaced. This made zero difference.

If i could find a new mech unit for a bit less then VW are asking id go down this route for sure, assuming VW arent going to do the repair under warranty.

GEORGE118 - i apologise i feel im hijacking a little, hopefully you will find this all helpful  :happy2:

Seems well priced for a refurb
With warranty surely should be worth a punt

Well www.ecutesting.com were not a great help after all. The wanted a part number for the mechatronic unit before they could tell me anything. I found a part number... they did not recognise it. Surely if i just tell them i have an 07 ED30 they would know if they could repair it!? I wasnt even asking for prices at this stage, just whether it could be done.

If i dont have any joy from the VW warranty route, i am just going to hunt down a new unit and fit the bugger myself.  :scared:
