hi all,
I'm relocating over to oz in the next few weeks and thought i'd start shopping for a mk6. have just seen this and wanted to get any thoughts/tips on what to watch out for that's specific to the mk6

it seems a very good price (well for oz anyway) which always makes me a bit suspicious
thanks in advance :happy2:

Timing chain tensioner failure. New engine required.

Does it say that in the ad?

The same could be said for any chain driven engine whereby a component causes engine misalignment?
-
That one looks grim

I would prefer a cleaner example that I could mod to personal taste.

Did anyone else notice the subtle wing-mirror mod? :scared:

Yes, perhaps. I have heard of this issue with other makes, but I don't know that much.
Just in case the op isn't aware the mk6 uses a chain instead of a belt.

I'm in need of changing my 3d GTI to a 5 door car and have been waiting it out to see how the MK7 will have an impact on the MK6 - but, without being funny, MK6 GTi's are WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY over priced.
I can get a Jag XF from the same year for less pennies.

You can also buy a TV for less and a Kebab , you have to pay more for a Porsche 911 turbo tho :rolleye:

I think there's been around 6 or so confirmed engine replacements caused by tensioner failure over on the Golfgti forum. The consensus seems to be that earlier models were more susceptible as the part has had several revisions since 2009 release.
There's a couple of threads running on Golfgti but the USA/International site also has threads running on the problem. Some people have had the revised Tensioner installed by Indy's garages as a precaution.
VW won't guarantee the work unless the entire chain system is replaced.

Cheers guys this is all really useful....and throws up further questions of what to get out there
Don't wanna go down the whole hsv/fpv thing, did contemplate a gt86 but it'll be expensive to tune. Choices choices

Good reason to get a MK6 golf R , same engine tried and tested in ED30 ??

yeah i'd love to but with the current exchange rate the pounds don't buy that many dollars! a decent R costs about £25k+ out there which I can't afford right now. still aim to get one but I need to save a few $$$ before I do.
think I might get a mk5 to tie me over
-
Well I decided not to get a mk6 as I wanted an R but can't quite afford it right now.
Am collecting this one the weekend
