Title: Big Al's Slippery slope, Take 2
Post by: big al on September 30, 2013, 11:18:59 am
Morning guys.
The GTI was owned for 4 years and had thousands spent making it a show queen, with a bit of power as well. Loved it, but with 40 mile a day commute the GTI wasn't practical so decided I'd taken it as far as I could and stripped it back and sold it on.

Build thread for it here:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,7427.525.html

Started buying parts for my new car as early as March this year, and after many a stressful day searching the car sale sites found this one:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fr122%2FSchnaffler%2F8C11DEE6-8E47-4417-A672-37BCFA503B3D-1831-000001CC2DCB2041_zpsf6399ffd.jpg&hash=87be34230bd4d1b0c04d94610a57bfa24cd39132)

Was after black or grey, never been keen on the white, blue, or green, or silver really, but I had a tight budget so had to settle for this, it's been well looked after. 89000 miles though, but panaramic sunroof, 18" wheels, newer steering wheel/airbag, and new style dash gauge, also the RCD510 with 6 CD changer, and reversing sensors (which I really didn't want as think it spoils the look of the rear bumper, but already quite a fan!) This one has a full service history, and has already had the cambelt changed.

So got it home yesterday, and within 2 hours had started the mini mods already:

If any of you follow me on instagram (big_al1982)
You will see that I have xenons, airride, recaro CS' race seats, RS3 brakes, and numerous other bits and pieces ready and waiting for next years show season.
Plenty more to come though.  :happy2:

I would recommend it mate.
Probably the worst time to get a sporty hatch as we have an 11 month old lad now, so not the easiest to get him in and out, but worth making it work for a car as nice as this one.
LOTS of plans to make this better than the golf, not as in your face, but just as heavily modded.

Nice to see another Rocco owner on here now  :happy2:

New style interior usually means you can activate big speedo, Needle sweep and XDS with vag com. .

Glad you told me that. Now plan to fit the cruise stalk, dash sweep, and code in some xenons.

Small update.
It was bound to happen sooner or later:

Amazing how much difference a 100mm drop can give.

Airlift slam series pro bags (older style) and airlift V2 digital management kit.
Currently in the process of building a show boot that is usable as well as nice to look at.
Barely any difference in ride quality, bit sad that I lose the adaptive chassis control, but it didn't make that much difference really.

Also removed the rear wiper as there is barely any point on the rocco and I wanted to smooth the rear off a bit.

Was enabling the Needle Sweep just a VCDS change Al?

Looking smart though. What wheels are tickling your fancy?
I'll look out for you on the scene in this next year  :happy2: We only missed players this year as we drove to the NRing which was one of the highlights of the year tbh  :driver:

That is seriously low!  :congrats:

Mine is slammed on AP coilovers now (wound all the way down) and it's  a good 35-40mm higher than yours. Air ride must be awesome having ride quality without worrying about speed bumps  :notworthy:

Was just a VCDS tweak for me Pete. Only works on my2010 onwards, I think it's called "staging" in the drop down VCDS list (not long coding helper)

Really don't know mate. Keep changing my mind whenever I think I'm sorted.
Having such wide rear arches I want some nice staggered wheels rather than spacing smaller ones. But finding nice 19's is proving difficult on such a tight budget without going down the custom route.
Tempted by some speedlines I've seen recently

The 19x8.5 OEM Speedline split rims Al?

They are one of my mecca wheels  :notworthy: Love them, a superb alloy wheel.
If you meant them, go for it  :happy2:

Nope, 19x9, ET33. They are a mixed set, the rears are off an A5 so have the deeper lip. Think I have found an even better set all the way over in Croatia. Just got to sell my RS3 brakes in order to afford them though :(
But worth every penny when you see them.

Well, I've never owned a grey Audi A4, a red jack or those wheels in that size or colour  :P ...

Just a net stolen pic, but I had them in original silver in the 18"x7.5J size. Way too small cosmetically for the MK5, but they work so well in 19"s.

Fitted my R line front bumper the other day.
Smoothed the number plate recess. Removed the random honeycomb grille (sure VW just had a load left over after the Lupo GTI and MK5 GTI)
and fitted a T5 slatted grille which was painted gloss black, and the surround in silver to match the rest of the bodywork.
And fitted the RNS 315 stereo

I would love them, but finding a set second hand is proving very difficult indeed.

Few updates, gave the motor a good cleaning today, tar all over it from the winter roads.

Went over to Luka's yesterday who helped fit the xenon headlights, since having these on the MK5 I can't do without them. Just need to get a newer module to allow full usage.

Also fitted the new alloys, BBS CH reps, staggered 19's 8.5 and 9.5, still tuck just about.
That's all for now, more updates after UD.

Been a bit quiet lately with the build up to Ultimate dubs, sent the application in, but was too late, until I got contacted by James at auto finesse and offered a space on their trade stand.
I was proud as punch to be inside again, the rocco Isn't up to show standard yet, but held it's own I think and got a lot of attention due to these updates I feel.

January I picked up some MK5 R bucket seats from down south, was a long day to get them and they weren't in the condition i'd expected, but the temptation was there to retrim them all anyway so this gave me the excuse (mainly as I hate the R logo embossed on the seat and couldn't bare to have that in my non R scirocco)

So they went over To Colin at D haden upholstery in Walsall who has done all my trimming on the rocco, a good local company who really understand all my odd requests.
So nappa leather with white stitching and harris tweed down the centres with the labels sewn into the seat bolsters:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FSchnaffler%2Fal%2F1653348_10202546054547153_630513224_n_zps66bacd00.jpg&hash=2082585f16a1652d1e36e5bfe44355e9188e5c38)

They also trimmed a custom C6 carbon steering wheel I had made as a one off:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FSchnaffler%2Fal%2F1925002_10202546054267146_1495338773_n_zpse829a69f.jpg&hash=a993896e26d19fe70c715a490de325d98eab2ec4)

And the finished result, sat on some 19 x8.5 and 19x9.5 OZ futura 2 piece splits repainted by A1 wheels Wolverhampton.

Thanks guys, some of the finer details do get overlooked, so pleased that the boot lifters are getting noticed.
Also had the entire centre console retrimmed in black leather with the white stitching to match the seats.
Got a few plans, but will be a while coming, got to save up to trim the rear seats, notch the chassis as it lays a bit high at the moment. Then bigger brakes, sort out the paint, and desperate for some R parts for the skirts and rear bumper. :happy2:

Thanks for the pic too Jay, looks ace.  :happy2:
