Post by: ghostgttdi on October 01, 2013, 04:13:55 pm
hi so I have a golf mk5 gt tdi 140 and theres a sort of whining noise from the front end thinking possible diff problems? or drive shafts? its only really noticeable when at slower speeds and when under braking/ coming to a stop. has any one else experienced this or any suggestions would be great thanks

could be wheel bearing or the normal turbo trouble

I've just had a rear wheel bearing done it doesn't sound like that did.
when you say turbo trouble what sort of problems do they have? as the cars only done 63k
if it is a turbo problem is it likely to be expensive??

Mine needed it's 3rd turbo at 100k miles, sold it on now though.
These cars are notorious for turbo trouble, especially the earlier ones. Meticulous oil services are a must.
A turbo wouldn't really whine when slowing down though, only when it's boosting. Can you here the noise when out of gear and coasting ?

yeah it does it when coasting as well its like a kind of binding noise and just gets louder the fast you slow down? im pretty sure its not the turbo but that does have a pretty weird sound when letting of the accelerator like its got a purge valve fitted but its standard???

It's not a sticking brake caliper is it ?
Try jacking each wheel up a spinning by hand, might help you narrow it down

thanks for the help I shall try it tomorrow if it stops raining and let you know, I assume the wheel will be just hard to spin if there is something wrong??

Yes it will be
There will be some resistance anyway, that's quite normal but if you're really struggling to turn the wheel then something could be wrong on that corner

Get someone to press the accelerator and see if the noise is coming from the high pressure fuel pump, Or any of the pumps. V common on mk6

It's normal for a turbo noise when you let off the throttle after spooling boost..

So when you're braking you get a noise, and the harder you brake the louder the noise gets?

So it's obviously brake related.
Probably low pads, or worn discs.
