My mate decided that he wanted a Mk5 golf and we found this one
http://www.smartautosnortheast.co.uk/used-cars/volkswagen-golf-2-0-gt-tdi-5dr-blyth-201307187879331
The add and guy at the dearlership say's it is the 140 bhp one, but when my mate rang his insurance they said it was the 170 bhp.
To be fair it does go well and has the dual climate control to but I always thought the 170 only came as a GT sport not the standard gt tdi it also has the exhaust hidden too not like the GT sport 170.
Any help would be great.
Cheers Dan

Definitely a 140 mate.
Besides the other differences you already mentioned, the 170 has Winter mode W button on the centre console which this doesnt.
-
Cheers for the reply.............
One thing i dont understand is that all the price comparison websites for insurance is saying it a 170bhp when its a 140bhp......I find this odd.
what is the winter mode w button.
Cheers Dan

Would have thought that the 170 would of had bigger wheels?

The 170 also has different bumpers the front being very similar to the Gti's :happy2: Defo a 140 mate
-
even so, but still why would the insurance say its a 170bhp? when its not! the only think I said to my mate to do it go to VW with the reg or VIN and ask them.
Seems strange.

I used to own a Mk4 Gt Tdi 150 but insurance seemed to think it was a 130 but never complained  just ring up the insurers and explain?

Easiest and quickest way to identify a GT 170 is the exhaust. If it has a double tip straight through the bumper it's a GT TDi 170

I understand the 170 comes with the twin exhaust, different bumper, bigger wheels, rear privercy glass etc I just find it strange when the insurance company and all the comparison website Are saying its a 170 when it obviously ant, that's the part I'm finding confusing. Is there away to change it as the insurance company we're being very difficult in my mate demanding it a 140.
He is planning on remapping it anyway so will find out for sure then
-
would say its a 140
-
Definitely a 140. Also sure the 170 never came out until 56 plates but I may be corrected?
Seems like it wrongly registered
-
Insurance database is not always correct. It thought my manual rocco was DSG
-
I work for Swindon insurance in I.T
And I can confirm that insurance companies do get it wrong quiet a lot of the times. We deal with this all the time.
You just have to ask them to put it in manually rather than via reg number.
-
Cheers for the replys lads I did think it was a 140. Just when the insurance company said it was a 170 made me think. It is swinton may mate insured with to....:)
Once again cheers dudes

I'm sure you can get a pre face lift GT in the 170 version, I remember test driving one, although I can't remember if it was an import. The 170 GTs were produced from June 06.
-
So are you saying all 170 BHP versions have the winter button or is it an optional extra? (I really hope that isn't a stupid question!)
Cheers

All have it. :)
