Title: Top vent query
Post by: Duke on October 08, 2013, 07:06:19 pm
Hi chaps,

The top vent in my GTI, above where the nav unit is always creaks when driving, most likely due to the cold/warm air coming through the vent under it. I have taken it apart previously a few times and put padding around the insides to try and stop it but its not made any difference.

I've noticed some (non-GTI?) have a storage tray on top instead of the vent.. do they have the same problem? Does anyone have the part number?

Thanks

Yes they do creak, and also look crap in co parison.
Pretty sure the top sensor is useful for the climatronic though if you are downgrading.

I put a brand new upper vent in this year and it creaks.

I found that spraying the contact points with silicon spray, when reassembling solved that problem for me.

I fitted the tray and it's the best thing I've done recently! No creaks or noises, couldn't care less what it looks like, all about peaceful driving!

Thanks for the replies  :happy2: I'll give the spray a go first then think about changing it for the tray if it doesn't work.

What does that bit do on the top, does anyone know? Is it taking cabin temp?

If I remember correctly its known as "Sunlight Photosensor 2 G134"

Disconnecting it will throw up a fault up when scanned with VCDS - how it affects the air-con system I've never run it disconnected long enough to find out.

The sensor gives the climate control an understanding of the radiant heat being felt in the car, in addition to the air temp, to work out what the resultant temperature felt by the car occupants isl. It's just like being outside in the sun or the shade - the air temp might be the same, but you're much warmer when benefiting from the radiant heat too.

My GTi car already had the tray when I bought it, it doesn't creak and I've removed it loads of times getting to the stereo.  I don't put anything in it as you see the reflection in the windscreen when driving.

I'm after the top vent and do the opposite swap to you!
