i changed my rear speed sensor on tuesday and finally got rid of the esp/abs/tyre deflation lights showing up. its been fine all week but then today the lights have started coming back on again :confused: anyone got a clue what could be the reason theyve started again?

see what faults show up
genuine part?

You really have to remove the disc but the hub is favourite for the ring corroding and giving that fault.
Part no:- 1T0 598 611 subject to year and diameter remark if it's the hub!
Price TPS £130.39 inc vat but full retail.
Sensor part No :- 1K0 927 807 - supersession to WHT 003 859 - price TPS £72.95

i had it scanned before i changed it thats how i knew which sensor it was. i havnt got vag com so dont want to shell out more money getting it scanned again. i got a bosch sensor @£45 so assume thats decent enough.
i havnt got the tools to remove the disks and stuff, but if it was the ring that was broken why has it been ok for 3 days? if it was the ring to start with then the lights wouldnt have gone off when i changed the sensor :confused:

The ring corrodes and gives the problem you've got. However, it's not sold as an item it come as part of the kit so you've got to destroy a perfectly good item eg wheel bearing to get to the ring,which is a push fit on the hub.
It is possible the harness on the vehicle is defective but a wiggle test with a multimeter would check that!

It's the image with the 2 year symbol on it - that's what the sell to facilitate the repair.

yeah ive heard that, i had my fingers crossed that wouldnt be the problem. i still dont get why its been ok for 3 days but as u said its maybe the harness, how do u check it?

You'll have to search on you tube,I've seen both items explained on there but for me to explain it would start, "Once Upon A Time"
Both are not hard with the right tools but you seem to have very little of them at your disposal.

well ive got a mulitmeter thats why i asked how u check it. will check on internet

well been for a drive today and realised the lights are coming on when i get over 40mph, before i changed the sensor they was coming on at 5mph, so im guessing the new sensor has to be ok and its got the be the ring so will get the tools the remove the brakes. can the brakes be replaced on axle stands? ive read the bolts can be very tight and u may not be able to get leverage on stands?

well cant get the m14 carrier bolts off so looks like jobs f**ked cos i cant even inspect the ring to see if its damaged or not, so looks like i will have to pay the a garage to change the wheel bearings and hope that sorts the problem. mot due next week too

Sorry to read you couldn't make progress, that issue with the carrier bolts is the only niggle in the inspection.
However, the wheel bearing can turn very nasty so may be for the best - never had a fault with the loom personally but plenty exciter rings have corroded away requiring bearings to be fitted!

Finally managed to strip my brakes to have a look if in reluctor ring was damaged, but where is it? Is it different on these? There is a plastic coating on the edge which the speed sensor is close too is that it? There no toothed metal ring at all

You can see the ring without stripping everything off. You need to look at the rear of the hub. Even the smallest cracks can cause the abs to not read correctly.
Just get an FAG bearing from euros.

As above - Even the dealer has hassle which bearing is fitted - but I'm sure it will fix it!

well after replacing sensor, stripping the hub and cleaning it the lights have returned :fighting: so just goin to replace wheel bearing and see if that cures it.

Use Vagcom or similar to actually diagnose the fault.
Check which side is having the problem.
Using the measuring blocks to measure LIVE the speed readings from the wheel.
Verify wiring integrity before replacing the sensor, resistance and voltage
If wiring is correct and sensor has been replaced and still having a problem then you can look at the speed sensor ring.
I had a terrible issue with my TDI which took ages to fix and in the end we were going to replace the ABS unit but the symptoms didn't add up and it turned out the problem was a faulty wire inside the body (all the battery etc needed to come out to rewire it, hitting a pot hole hard caused some damage)
