Title: Cam Following query.

Hi,
I have read alot about people changing there cam following with some saying do it every few years.
My gti is 2005 with axx engine I think.
What does the cam folling do and what is the purpose of changing it?
Is it meant to have holes in it or is that from wear?
How do you know if it needs changing?
Sorry if I am seeming simple..
Any info would be great.

The dealer sells the part or TPS as  - Tappet  - part number 06D 109 309 C. Full Retail Price £29.87 inc vat

It's good practice to replace the seal at the same time

O-Ring - part number WHT 005 184 Full Retail Price £11.11

Can you buy just the little metal part or do you need to buy the whole thing complete with tappet?
