Received an FB update from Steve Petty Motorsports a couple of days back and thought it may be of interest around here?
They have finally got around to releasing a 2 piece front disc upgrade for the MK5/6 GTi, looks great and should perform well and is a bit of a bargain cost wise imo...
Retains the stock GTi caliper, but gives a 345mm x 26mm disc which is a claimed 14% lighter than the OE R32 disc, directional vanes, coated bell and if i remember my brakes math lesson from Prof Friction aka DaveB then anything above 343mm should ideally be 2 piece, which these are :happy2:
All in for a pair of discs, new Goodridge stainless lines, caliper carrier brackets and hardware for $545 (£377 ish), bargain! :happy2:
Budget say £150 for a set of naughty pads for the OE caliper and you could have a very capable budget BBK that according to SPM will fit under the stock wheels...
Guess the prospect of using these with some NQSBBK calipers with a change of carrier is a possibility? /Calling Prof Friction...

Looks very interesting! Do you think they'd fit under 17'' Monzas without a spacer?

I couldn't be 100% sure as it'll come down to the caliper spacing, but 17" Monzas will clear a 345mm disc radially as they will fit over the OE R32 ones
The critical element for clearance will be how far out the caliper comes from the centre but looking at the carriers in this kit they seem fairly skinny and mostly to move the caliper radially and the 312 caliper is a good bit smaller than an R32 one..
-
Do they do them for R32 calipers?

Working on them next apparently :happy2:

I've got a mk6 golfR...will these fit & would I benefit on this kit as I think oem setup is r32 brakes on the R?
-
better than stock, and cheap...hopefully not TOO cheap, also point of order, anything over 343mm (13.5") should be floating not just two piece.
Not convinced the diameter/thickness ratio is good either, its either face thickness mass for heat absorbtion or air gap for cooling at 26mm you wont get either with these.
But hey at that sort of money (380) landed with duty paid and VAT I'll have a pair myself, OEM Gti Caliper pad avilable in M1144 and 55 - cheap too...
Nice one Steve, shame the NQS caliper wont go over these, that maxes out at around 325mm
-
Isn't the R32/S3 disc 32mm?
-
30 i think ian!

I'll add that factoid to my Prof Fiction 'Big brakes math book' :happy2:
Yeah hopefully it turns out to be a quality product, SPM seem to have a decent track record with race car builds and aviation part manufacture so let's hope they know what they are doing, especially with the latter!

These won't fit the Golf R /R32 calipers sadly, designed for the 312mm GTi setup

Sadly just had a look at the website, the price above is in dollars in the US.
So add state tax/duty/VAT and 25 kg shipping and it could get nearer £5-550. At which point im asking what make are the rotors..... probably coleman which if they are Coleman arent without there issues, think ECS
Only my $0.02 though, they look great. AP do a replacement disc assembly for the R32 disc but its £700 quid or something stupid - floating though.
Its difficult to justify the expense based on a weight saving when 9/10 times the spare wheels in the boot and SatNavs fitted.
Cheap and cheerful or expensive and capable is still the way for me imvho
Good find Steve, our US cousins will be fitting these in droves Im sure

Yep. There's a company in the uk that make them too. TDR I think for about that money dave

Yeah TRD do or did a 2 piece 345x30 2 piece rotor, wanted just shy of £800 for a pair when I enquired last year though :surprised:
-
Yeah that's them. Doesn't make sence at that price

None at all imo, the R32 caliper wouldn't do them justice and at 50% the cost of a full AP 330mm kit it's madness tbh..
As Dave says, cheap and cheerful or expensive and capable is a good way to look at it, if you could bring this SPM kit into the UK for a keen price and it turns out to be decent kit it 'could' work out a reasonable upgrade option for the GTi for less or around the cost of the R32 setup but with a significant weight saving and a better performing disc?
The Yanks are getting their first deliveries next week so interested to hear the feedback tbh :happy2:

Theres always somebody making something to a budget. I'm far from dismissive about it, lots of people just dont have the budget for Brembo/APs finest, they may only have the budget for (being polite) second tier products only once, what happens when you need to buy twice though.
You can get cheap castings from Eurac which then can get machined easily enough to be any size required, its the heat treatment thereafter that they dont get or the finishing process to make them black that debrittleises them. In fairness you wont notice enroute Asda, but its that 3rd lap at Oulton with your mate in front of you whos spent 1/2 as much and hes pulling away that is the real test for the second tier stuff often it doesnt end well
Mtec are the disc of choice at the moment, they get machined, blackened or plated and then sold. They start life as Mintex castings which are pretty much the most "cost effective" discs you can buy but nobody gives a toss because theyre cheap and black!
I machine castings but keep the feed speed down, coolant running and machine outside faces one day and inside faces the next. Im not under any real form of commercial pressure so can take my time luckily.
Subject to confirmation of a landed delivered price I'd be seriously considering these assemblies, this sort of stuff does need to be at a "tempting" price in my eyes however
-
^^ I'd have to agree 100% Dave
It's the 'middle' ground stuff that seems to draw in with a tempting price but often never delivers in reality, take me for example, I'd love to hang some APs/Brembos on mine and although ive come very close to pulling the trigger I just can't justify the cost versus whether I or the car given its use will do them justice and get my money's worth as it were, my track time is minimal really and not sure Emma needs 4 pots for the Tesco run, but then again...
So, I find myself contemplating the Forge kit, D2, K sport etc etc but know it won't deliver and most likely won't be as good as the R32 kit and would forever kick myself for not doing it correctly for that few hundred £s extra in the first place...
Hence why I've stuck with the R32 kit for so long as it does exactly what I need at a price point I'm comfortable with, but will admit that if this SPM kit turned out to be any good and could be brought in for say, £475ish then I'd be giving it a whirl with a set of trusty 1144s in the GTi calipers :happy2:

So... MTEC, better than OEM parts?
-
Difficult to say really, I some sometimes get PMs Saying "what about these discs from eBay Dave they're £20 cheaper than OEM but they're black and everybody's revved up on the forums about them."
So if they last 2 years OEM discs are 20p per week more expensive......
There are aftermarket discs out there that surpass OEM quality, the brembo stuff with the -11 part numbers are in essence the same castings that the OEM discs are from but have painted bells and edges to make them look and last a bit better, they also have min wear indicators machined in so in that respect they're OEM++
You have to ask what processes they get / don't get and how it affects their effectiveness when hot.
Some high end AP rotors and the OEM Bentley discs get heat treated in molten salt and then cooled in different ovens until they get the spec they want, they're £400 each.......
That said there's probably only 4 foundrys in the world knocking out these discs, stuff in Mintex boxes tends to be more affordable but may well contain a AP Lockheed Disc which is good stuff. My early years at Brakes international we're spent pissing the warehouse staff off rooting through Mintex cayenne pad boxes rooting out the ones with Pagid pads in.
So in a round about way what I'm saying is unless its in a red brembo box or a Oem box you just don't know what you're getting. That said in 90% of cases going to Sainsburys it doesn't matter.
If you're off to the ring or doing a track day or drive your stage 2 GTI like a demon all the time then spend some cash on the iron otherwise MTEC stuff will be fine.
One other rule of thumb would be to spend extra on the discs if you've spent extra on the pads

Ok thanks. Brembos it is then! :happy2:
