Title: Diagnosing rattles/rumbles
Post by: Rob. on October 24, 2013, 09:40:04 am
I'm trying to work at removing the number of interior/exterior rattles on my Jetta to stop it from driving me insane. I've cured a particularly bad metallic rattle coming from the roof light, now to the next one...

I'm fairly certain it's coming from the exhaust, somewhere under the rear footwell. It sometimes appears at idle, or if I coast in gear with my foot off the accelerator at 850rpm or so. It sounds like it's vibrating into the floorpan

I'm hoping to have a crawl around under the car at the weekend, but I've never worked on a Mk5 exhaust before. What are my options likely to be for adjustment? Is it on hangars that be moved about? Is it possible that it's related to excess engine movement, via worn/broken mounts?

Thanks.

If it's still the standard system which is very likely there's a join from the downpipe to middle box and maybe another one from middle box to rear section so you should be able to make some adjustments.

If you can't make any adjustments to the alignment of the exhaust which is more than likely your problem then maybe you could replace the rubbers for slightly longer ones?

If your lucky maybe one of the rubbers has gone causing the exhaust to touch the body.

Definitely an important bit of information I missed...it had a Milltek cat-back fitted before I bought the car, and it's been fine for the few few months of my ownership

I'm not gonna get a chance to put her up on axle stands this weekend, which is annoying.

Turns out it was a dead easy fix...jacked her up and noticed one of the cross-braces that sits below the exhaust had been bent upwards.

Whipped it off, bit of persuasion with a hammer and put it back on again!
