Title: Tornado Red Three door GTI Bbs vz on
Post by: Hawk on October 27, 2013, 05:33:13 pm
Hi, new member here but certainly not new to Volkswagens. In my time I've had 8 mk2 Golf GTIs 2 mk3 GTIs and a mk4 GT Tdi with a few Audis thrown in too most recently an A8 which I've just sold to buy this car.

Right, after the wee intro, onto the car in question. It's a 2007 GTI with fsh and a few mods which include, cat back custom stainless exhaust, panel filter, eibachs, carbon mirror covers, carbon grill, laminexed fogs, gloss back skirts and rear bumper, an alpine head unit that controls iPod/phone through the steering wheel controls, and a 12" sub n amp in the boot. It pulls very well and has a rolling road print out of 235bhp and 239lbft of torque. I'll be looking to remap it in the near future and may well just jump to stage 2

As with nearly any 6 year old car it isn't perfect but it's clean and tidy and drives absolutely spot on.

There's a few styling modifications that aren't to my taste but that gives me the opportunity to put my own stamp on the car. These being the gloss black parts that I'll be colour coding tornado red and the front plate possition which I've already rectified.

Anyway enough talk, here's some pics.

As I got the car, it's a bit dirty as I'd been out in the rain last night and not washed it yet.

Plans are to sort out the gloss black bit as I'm not keen on them, change the wheels for a set of 18s replace the drivers seat back material as the bolsters a bit worn and then remap it.

Must admit I'm happy with it tho. The guy I bought it from is a vw mechanic it wants for nothing mechanicaly and it's had oil changes every 7k miles under his ownership.

That's it for now although I'm not usually one for hanging about with doing bits n bobs to my cars so I'll keep this updated as I go.

Cheers

Gregor

Who knows, he told me that he was the only person who he'd talked to about it that thought it looked nice, I promptly agreed haha. Each to their own I suppose but I'll certainly be changing it, that's for sure. The way he's treated the car and knowing a very good mate of his is what made me go for the car.

Here's a some of my old cars. It'd take me forever to dig out pics of them all.

Bright blue mettalic mk2 golf converted to a vr6 engine, I've had two of these although the other was black.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm certainly enjoying driving the car in the few days I've had it.

I used the 1mm thick double sided stickers you get for plates buddy.

Cheers bud,Yeah if I was wanting to remove it for shows etc I'd go the magnet route but I'm not planning on removing it so the sticky tape does me fine.

Well I've had this a couple of weeks now and the plans are turning to action.

Firstly the exhaust was a bit too loud for my tastes as it was basically a straight through cat back stainless system with a rear back box so I went to a local exhaust place called pipe dynamics and had them weld me in a centre silencer.

Sorry about the pics in this whole post as they were all taken with my phone.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0369_zpsb65074d6.jpg&hash=6492e330e6fbdb89a0aac8ff7a3ea6b616fc9ab5)

It's taken the drone away but still has a wee bit of noise to it to keep me happy.

When I got home I gave the car a bath and cleaned up the tailpipes too as they were in dire need of it.

And GTI sticker that I put on the passengers side of the dash trim.

Now comes the fun parts. I've bought a set of 18" bbs speedlines that are in a mess cause they were badly rattle can painted before. They're straight and the lips are rash free so they'll come up fine. They're in the powdercoaters split down and ready to refurb in silver.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0374_zps6c470952.jpg&hash=1d461718113b817cf930bf10de8bb30c94d884ca)

I've also bought a set of four Vredstein ultrac sessantas in 225 40 18 ready to go on. Allong with (sticker) bbs centres that I'll put on a set of flat centres I've yet to find.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0376_zpse87ded1c.jpg&hash=436cf613a42762d3bba620077e83d917315d66f9)

The car also goes into the bodyshop for a couple of days to get rid off all the gloss black parts so by the end of he week the car should be looking a whole lot better.

Cheers  :happy2:

Body shop phoned this morning saying they would ideally like to spray the whole front bumper as there was a bit where the gloss black theme had been carried onto the bumper and the lacquer was lifting. So it's now getting front and rear bumpers fully painted along with the side skirts and front splitter.

The Powdercoaters will hopefully have my wheels ready tomorrow too.

I've also sourced an rcd510 that I'll fit to replace the Alpine single din that's in it just now, I'll order a new can gateway too.

After all that I'll get onto detailing the car.

Well I got the car back from the bodyshop last night and they've done a cracking job on the colour coding.

I ended up getting front and rear bumpers removed and fully painted along with the side skirts too. The black bits are done in Satin black as I asked and the finish is spot on.

Anyway, here's some pics.

I went to Kinross last night and bought this from Doig90. Cheers bud, hope your rns turns up soon.

It's an Rcd 510. I've bought an mdi so I'll have full control of my iPod from the headunit, I'll also have to get a new can gateway coded and sent out to prevent battery drain.

Oh, I wish the modding was just beginning I've been modding my own cars for nearly 22 years now  still every hobby costs money and it's better than sticking a needle in your arm (I'd imagine)  :scared:

Looking forward to getting the rcd in and although it won't sound as good as the current Alpine that's in it, I just want an oem headunit.

Was checking the fluid levels today and couldn't bring myself to close the bonnet without having a wee clean as it was thick with fine dust and general grime.

Here's a few wee before and afters.

Right, next on my hit list was a double din headunit so I purchased and rcd 510 off Doig90
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2F4bb0ec664b61ad8dd088d765817a4a5d_zpsa9302696.jpg&hash=c1b65f48b1b668082bddc75ee6a6969e6feecd70)

Fitting these to any car older than 2008 causes battery drain so I had to order a new CAN BUS Gateway, I ordered and payed for this yesterday from Eddie NL with the spec of my car and It was delivered along with a plug in and play modified loom for the mdi unit I'd bought to have full control of my iPod through the headunit and it also displays the track playing on my highline display, it's fully functional through my multi function steering wheel too. Must say I'm very impressed with Eddies knowledge and the service he supplied.

Right so onto the fitting. Can bus gateway first.

First step is to remove the windscreen wipers. And here came the first problem. A bolt had obviously been sheared before and replaced with a 10mm threaded part instead of the usual 13mm (I think it had been welded onto the sheared thread) first gentle turn and yup, you guessed it, it snapped.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0595_zps58bef764.jpg&hash=d583f5012d6037b4205c83fe9a51af36eb629529)

Can't do anything about that now so, carry on stripping parts. Wipers, wiper motor and a few trim parts.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0599_zpsc438f636.jpg&hash=f2d066558d63f0dc936ef369f09ff856f3a43295)

Which lets you get to the CAN BUS Gateway.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0602_zps08be620c.jpg&hash=36584598225a8273f6c8f8463b3ec98f87619c55)

Swap that sucker for the new one and refit parts.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0520-1-1_zps705d255f.jpg&hash=8b58aa1dfba3df6e0b8e6b1471901f400dca6ecf)

With that out the way, onto the headunit. The one that was in it was a cracking Alpine one but I wanted an oem double din. So, out with this.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMAG0409_zps2a8de977.jpg&hash=9eb803d69a9a05b61eb7819b2f597f9adf541a80)

Ps I got it sitting flush.

Happy days everything works perfectly except as i was sore and it was raining i rushed it and I forgot to reconnect the wiper motor so I'll have to take the wipers and scuttle off again   :headbang:

The yellow fogs were on the car when I got it buddy. It's a film that you put over them called laminex.

I realised when I removed it that I quite like it too I might end up giving them a smoke finish tho.

Cheers buddy. It's getting there. I've just bought coils and my bbs splits are refurbed but I've decided to sell the wheels.

I trawled eBay for ages to find the sticker, here's the link http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=290414792171 you get 4 of them.

Few things been happening with the car.

I Got my wheels back from Mikey at Fife Powdercoatings on Sat So went down and they fitted them for me too.

Wheels in question are 18" Genuine Bbs Calito 2 piece splits which were option upgrade alloys that were only available for upgrade if you bought an s line.

Here's a pic of one Mikey sent me when they were getting done.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fqq235%2FTheHawk_bucket%2FIMG_7451_zps2ee94717.jpg&hash=2e73349bbf66f13e25011ea8eaa94eb4ea0986a5)

They've been shod in vredstein ultrac sessantas and I've bought brand new Audi centres for them too.

Here's a few brutal pics taken in the dark with a frozen dirty car but you get the idea.

Bought these off Jas106 and they've done 400 miles so as you can imagine they're almost as good as new. I'll get them fitted soon enough.

I also got my new window wiper mechanism and transfered my motor over to it so I now have 2 working wipers again.

Old sheared one versus how it should be.

Cheers buddy. it's been a frantic 4 or 5 weeks since I've bought the car either trawling the net for parts, dropping parts and car off for paint or fitting parts. It's getting there now tho. I'm not sure on the wheels tho, they're lovely looking wheels and my crappy pics do them no justice but I'm not sure I want them on my car. I'm really wanting a set of anthracite bbs vz but I can't find them. If anyone has a set and wants to do a deal for bbs splits I'm all ears.

18x8 Genuine Bbs vz in anthracite. They're the wheels I've always wanted on a red mk5 Golf GTI so I'm happy to have sourced a brand new set. Can't wait to get the coilovers fitted and get these on too.

Had my new wheels on since before Christmas but never took any pics, gave it a wee wash today and snapped some. I'm just gonna wait till the spring time to fit my Weitec coils so this'll have to do for now.
I'm so glad I got a set of the last run of vz's that bbs will ever do.
