Title: Mk7 gti dsg
Post by: celica on November 03, 2013, 01:49:36 pm
Had a go in one, gearbox in sport and electronic in sport mode
My gosh its really good

Drove mk5 gti manual and thought it was nippy but bit dull and flat

The noise was also very nice to match

What have they done from mkv to mk7 to make it so much better?

Mk7 has 220ps and 258 lb/ft, 0-60 6.5 secs

Mkv ed30 is 230ps and 221 lb/ft, 0-60 6.6secs

Does the mk7 run a ko4 turbo?

Very limited information on what turbo is on a Mk7 GTI
someone took a picture from a show but doesnt really tell anyone much..

It would probably be an IHI turbo as used on the mk6 tsi onwards..

Yes, it is an IHI turbo. :happy2:

The MKVII is a totally different chassis to the MKV and uses the new MQB chassis module that is both stiffer and lighter than the MKV chassis, so overall the MKVII is around 60kg lighter. Combine that with more power and torque and it will feel much better. The MKVII you drove also could also have the performance pack and adaptive chassis control, which add to the driving experience. :happy2:

When I test drove one with the adaptive chassis but no performance pack, it really was a revelation.
However - most of a cars handling and response are in it's bushes. So who's to say that a BRAND NEW Mk5 wouldn't handle "similarly".
To be fair for the breadth of ability of the car the asking price suddenly becomes less steep. Yes you can buy a 135m for the same money (basically) but just because it's got 100bhp more, doesn't necessarily make it a faster car over a country road, or a nice place to sit (the inside of the 1-series is like Eeores bottom)

No it didn't have performance pack

I didn't take note of the on screen changes that can be made as found gearbox in sport and mode sport on dash was good
60kg lighter than mk5
Ihi turbo, what's that versus ko4 say on ed30

Isn't the IHI a smaller turbo than the K03 and K04?  More to do with a better head design.

Turbo is not the be all and end all in cars power you know
Reports are about 300bhp from a remap on a Mk7 in Europe..

Just saying.... You seem to think that's the final casting vote for some reason.

One person didn't like it and now it's "pants on the track"......

That's not just a remap though bud, that reads that it's Stage 2 hardware and map making 289bhp; better than K03 but something any healthy Mk5 K04 can make with just a map.

I very much doubt the tiny IHI Turbo could puff out enough to keep up with a Stage 2+ K04, even if the head design is better.

I keep reading the mk7 GTI is lighter than the mk5GTI but is it? I thought when I compared the original quotes figures it wasnt. Maybe it is when actuallt measured?  :sad1:

Oh please!!! Give me a break.. Tiff is a well respected Racing driver, and his verdict of a car on the limit is worth considering if buying a mk7 GTi to maybe eventually modify..

It still is pants on track..

Watch the video for yourself, you can see the brakes are continually trying to straighten up the car.

I would be happy, as he says the Edition 30 was much better and Vw have ruined a good car.

Stage 2 is only hardware like an intercooler, intake and exhaust my man. Think it even says so in the text ;)

Quote
When HG Motorsport first strapped the GTI to their dyno the results were susprising, because in stock form the GTI actually recorded 239HP and and 359NM, significantly up on Volkswagen’s quoted figures.

It all starts off at Stage 1, which uses a carbon air intake, Bull-X sports exhaust and HF Series intercooler to liberate 263HP and 376Nm from the turbocharged 2.0-litre.

Moving on to Stage 2, HG then remap the GTI’s ECU. The result is 289HP and 405Nm.

The final stage requires more serious optimisation of the ECU to squeeze the last few drops from the GTI’s powerplant. Sadly there aren’t any performance figures but it’s safe to say you’d notice the difference, even at just Stage 1.

So it did, surprisingly..
Turbos are not the be all and end all like I said. A smaller housing can still have larger (relative to size) turbines .. doubt they are actually any smaller than the k03s , combined with better airflow...

K04 FTW :pomppomp:

Now, strap a K04 to the TSI engine... (although probably wouldn't bolt up)

Drivel!! As per usual!! You wouldn't know a decent handling car if it came down and knocked you off your ladders!!!

fortunatley the Mk7 i'm thinking of allows you to completely turn off the driver aids and has a race mode

interesting having driven 5/6/7 back to back i'd agree the 7 is to planted but point to point was quicker over my favourite B road despite having least amount of power, 300 miles showed it was the better car, however, whether it felt special is a totally different argument

end of the day not everyone wants a Megane RS, M135 or a car built in 2007 but at least make a decision when you've driven one

I couldn't care less about its track manners as that isn't somewhere I am likely to drive it, but if its electronic safety nets stop me or the actions of others from an accident then I am all for them.
