Title: Next car...
Post by: GTI power on November 03, 2013, 01:55:08 pm
So I've recently got my MK5.. Having had a S3 8L before that and a string of previous generations of GTI's from MK2 - MK4.

I've fallen in love with the MK5 and it's everything the S3 wasn't. It actually feels quicker (though it's 60bhp less) and surprisingly more agile?!

I'm now thinking what my next car is going to be.. As I'm going to start saving (hate the idea of finance - been there done that).

After owning a MK5 I've settled on the fact that it has to be a Golf.

My choices are pretty simple..

MK6 GTI (or perhaps GTD?)
MK5 ED30
MK5 R32

What do you guys think? I am leaning towards MK6. :-)

I've also had to start thinking about next car - due to the fact my mrs is now pregnant with our 3rd child & just got a Lab puppy - so Jetta isnt going to cut it for much longer!

I'm going for a MK6 GTD - ticks all the boxes, and after a map and some suble mods will be perfect for me.

I like the idea of the GTD economy, but I feel I'd always be wishing it was a GTI :(.

I'm seriously leaning towards a MK6 but the ED30 just has something about it.

I vowed to always buy Diesels from now on for main/family/commuting - about 4 years ago. 2nd cars dont count (so run a mk2 gti 8v for weekends!)

Love the torque and ease of cruising at low revs and great economy - whats not to like!

What are the specs of the GTD? I test drove one and it felt quite punchy, but felt a bit tame next to my MK5

Std on the 2014 model ones (sept onwards?) are meant to be 180bhp to match the Octavia VRS 2.0 TDi CR
a map, exhaust, filter and a few other tweaks should get you over 200bhp easy

I've been waiting for the price of the Mk6 GTi's in 4 door guise to drop a little - but they don't seem to be budging at the minute. I've never known a mainstream car, like the Golf, to be so hard to get a hold of at the right spect/mileage/price.  People are asking for £13-14k for cars above 70,000 miles. Second options are a A5 Sportback, A4 Estate or a Jag XF.

I'm going to wait another 6-9 months and re-evaluate my options then.

Ive got until June next year before we need to change - so hopefully the prices will start to come closer to £11K or so!

It was only yesterday that my 142000 mile Jetta had another MOT at VW (passed NO advisories). I had a look round but found myself being drawn to the MK6 Jetta, sat in a 2.0l Tdi sport with leather and satnav, also had highline and MFSW (standard kit now). They did have the Golf GTD for similar money (prefer the seats) but not feeling the same being a hatch. They still wanted the best part of 16K for both.
That is just too much of a cost to change for me at this time.

What Mk5 GTI variant do you have?
Have you at least Stage 1'nd it?  Did you map the 8P S3?  damn shame if not.

8l is what I had, and yeah, it was mapped to 260bhp.

I have a 2.0T DSG 200bhp model

Interesting it made the same as the 8P as standard...

Is your GTI a standard K03 GTI or Ed.30/Pirelli K04... both do well with maps especially the latter on the door of 300bhp with Stage 1.

Question is, why are you looking to replace so early on in ownership?

Think you misread my post buddy. I'm not, I prefer not to finance so I'm looking at my next car now and starting saving.

It's a KO3 GTI

If you're saving I'd just try put away a little more and get a Mk6 Ed35. I assume its going to take you a fair few months to get the pennies together and hopefully by then the Ed35 will have come down in price.

+1

vRS is basically a Golf.

Or can say non-Golf, be Bavarian, and say a 330d?
230hp, space, RWD and 40mpg

Id go for mk6 mate better engine although ed30 is more for the tuner as would get more power from the bigger turbo and although r32 are more powerfull and 4d surprisingly sluggish and not much better than a standard gti due to the weight ?

The GTD engine is excellent, it's very smooth and doesn't drive like the old mk4/5 TDI's. Throttle response is amazing for a diesel and the extra 200+ miles per tank is a great bonus. A map will nudge it over the 200bhp mark but the figures don't do it justice. A mapped 170 TDI will be quicker in all circumstances than a Stock mk6 GTI

The XDS system mimics a real limited slip diff and (when turned to max in VCDS) is really effective at reducing under steer.

The mk6 cabin is of a noticeably higher quality than the MK5's too  :happy2:

MK6 Golf roomier than a Jetta?

Yeah, I'd really worry about the Mk6 GTI engine... you've got to ask yourself why VW used the TFSI in the Golf R and Audi in the NEW S3...

Golf R?

Strongest engine, 4WD, DSG, Launch control and 270 bhp standard. Looks and drives better than an S3 too.
