Hey guys, not had the car long but only just noticed this.
i only noticed it happens when the engine is warm too(i tried it when it was cold again), its like a ticking noise that's constant but i can only hear it from inside and whilst idle.
anyway i found a video which is the exact same noise i can hear, anyone have any idea what it is? It seems as though the revs drop off slightly, if i touch the accelerator a tiny bit and bring the revs up it goes away.
just for clarity mine is a 07 plate Ed30, under warranty too.

Recirculation Flap Motor?
-
Isn't the ventilation motor fan failure - do a search on it you get some strange sounds when the fan gearbox fails!
-
but why would the noise go away if the accelerator is pressed to add a couple more revs?
thanks for the replies :happy2:
-
Next time you're getting the car scanned do an output test on module 8 for the HVAC system.
This will test all the motors etc and you'll hear the noise then, if it's what we think it is.
-
ok will do thanks :happy2:
i really need to get VCDS at some point.. :ashamed:
-
I had a noise which I could only hear on tick over inside the car, with a bit of research I found out it was a clip that comes loose from the fuel pipe, it's located at the back of the engine drivers side. I'll take a picture when I get a moment. might not be that but solved the noise on mine, hope this helps mate
-
awesome thanks, i will have to have a look to see if i can find any loose clips around the engine. :happy2:
-
Did you solve this? I got the same sound but not as loud.
-
honestly im still looking into it.. i only get the weekends to fiddle with the car when its not pissing it down,
I looked in the engine bay drivers side and could not see or move anything that was loose, one plastic clip was loose but I doubt it was that.
I am gonna have a proper inspection this weekend, when the car is cold and warm, i will post the outcome, although for now it does seem to be intermittent... the noise comes and goes.
Does yours do the same or is it constant no matter what the conditions?
-
Hey mate does this sound only come when the engine get up to temp if so I had the same issue and have now had it resolved. Let me know sam
-
Yeah it did it when it was still warm, around 80-90.

Exactly the same as mine. Not cheap to get fixed though cost me just over 600 quid, but defo worth the money. Where are u based if near the midlands I can recommend the garage that did mine and another forum members car.
-
Great news mines also the same! £600 to fix. Havin' a laugh surely!
Whats the actual cause?
-
Manchester, do you think it could be a warranty job as I only just got the car and it's under warranty...

Cam chain and tensioner?

depends what type of warrenty u have I had insurance warrenty and wasnt coverd for it was a right load of s##t. So ended up paying forIit it would probably be best to speak to the place where u got it from. Even if they say that u need it diagnosing properly then might be best topay a garage to look at it, at least u can tell them what symptoms your having and where to look!
-
I read somewhere it could be the cambelt tensioner.
It does throughout all temps on idle, doesnt get any louder or quieter. Constant volume level. Cambelt kit is on my list of things to get done so will see.
-
well my cambelt is brand new and all parts surrounding it are new, i checked the list they did this just before i bought it.
no idea why i would have to fork out 600... :scared:
-
Cam chain tensioner not cam belt tensioner, this is inside the engine
-
I had pretty much the same noise and read about the cam chain/tensioner issue on here. The chain is one the other side of the engine to the can belt to the right of the engine as you look at the front of the car.
Had my local (and totally trusted) garage have a look. They took the engine apart, confirmed it was the chain and tensioner, ordered the parts from Vw and did the work.
No noise when done. They also did the cam belt and tensioner as it was nearly due and made sense for peace of mind and labour perspective.
Not saying it is the above but sounds similar.

Im going to order my list up on Tuesday down TPS, See if my staff discount will take a chunk of money off the prices lol Let you know the prices etc
-
Thanks mate, PM me the prices, because I'll forget to check in here again.

UPDATE:
I spent all weekend in the car, as often as i could in silence, so i could hear any sounds.
Not a damn peep... car was as smooth and quiet as it would be brand new. Drove perfectly well and even had a Peugeot 208 GTi for breakfast. :driver:
i have tested it hot & cold, with no other sounds other than the Climate control chugging every now and then.
so i have no clue what the ticking could have been at the time of hearing it. :ashamed:
-
Mine is very intermittent,
Also my Climate Controls/Heaters do a fair but of chugging!
-
It actually started ticking again before.. It sounds like something is loose.. But I can only hear it from inside the cabin.. No idea what it is.
The heaters and climate control are all normally chugging away and this noise comes and goes but for long periods... No idea what it is.
Vcds says it's clear so I dunno..

Do a search for fuel pipe rattles - common issue for your complaint!
-
This is my actual sound now, after a good drive and on a warm engine only.
OOOOOOK
Rev counter is normal, doesn't dip lower or anything, but i have noticed that it does sound like it is revving lower and higher on its own as in hovering on a normal rev and a little lower rev. like breathing... that's the best way to describe it.. :stupid:
ill have a look under the hood tomorrow and make sure i look at all the pipes etc that i can get to, but i have no idea what this is.
-
bump,
this is now a standard sound once the engine is up to temp...
-
I think mine's the same dude, I'm in Manchester too, where abouts are you?
-
Altrincham/Sale area bud.
I think I might have this sorted from what i can see on this thread http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18277&page=2 (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18277&page=2)
I am going give it a go this weekend to see if it stops it, sounds like a common problem with the plastic fuel lines vibrating, which sound like its coming from the dash.
If the noise stops when you press the accelerator slighlty it should be the fuel lines.
DOYLEBROS - thanks for the tip.
-
Please let me know how you get on fella! Your not too far from me! :innocent:
-
Will do! :)

There is a better how to on this site somewhere - there is a TSB from VW on it I've read as well.
Hope it work out for you!
-
I have done this little number on my motor and it seems to have sorted my ticking noise problem after a run up to temperature.
Packed it full of packing foam, which was really handy! As it came with small squares cut into it so all I had to do was tear off the right sizes :happy2:
Also found two other possible rattles as pictured, these two screws were on either side of the dash and easy to get to, they were pretty much fully loose so that's annoying..

the screws are in the same place on both sides.

Taken with my potato, please excuse quality.

Pm'd dude, great work!
-
Been noticing this noise lately in my eddy too... did you manage to find out and sort out the rattly noise in the end skriller? I've looked like a right idiot sticking my head in the footwells and around the engine bay to try and even find out where its coming from haha! sounds like a metal-y rattle when i listened under the bonnet... :S
-
When I was listening out for mine, I couldn't hear it from the engine bay..
I could only hear it from in the cabin and it sounded like it was behind the dash or steering wheel.
It was definitely the fuel lines rattling under the car, once I packed them out it was gone.
-
Yea mine sounds like its behind the dash, kinda to the right hand side. I'll give this a go when I have time, gotta be worth a shot! Thanks!
-
Funny found the same problem last week, how did you fill them, I used tape... Wonder is there a rubber grommet missing?
-
This is worth a read

Beginning to think mine might not be the fuel lines judging by the sound I can hear from within the engine bay. I've got a video (hope it works....). Dont know if the guy's who have solved their rattles had anything similar or if not is it what some people have mentioned regarding the cam belt or whatnot within the engine itself???
