Does anyone know if new S3 (and I assume upcoming Golf R 2014) engine is the same base engine as previous versions - i.e. TFSI CDL variant or whether it is a TSI thats been tuned?
Also if it is the same engine, anyone know what the modifications are?
Cheers

I believe it's a TSI with K04.

I believe it's a TSI with K04.
Ian is right. Its taken VAG a while to learn how to get the K04 to work with the TSI, as they originally struggled to do it with the MK6 Golf R and went with the old TFSI in the end.
I wonder if they will keep the exhaust manifold integrated into the Cylinder Head?

So the new S3 and Mk7 R, are (lol) TFSI again...?

Audi I retained the TFSI name, but the engine is as we know it - a TSI :happy2:

Now that's enough to drive you bonkers right there. :rolleye: They called the Mk6 R a TSI when it was a TFSI, now they are going to call the Mk7 R a TFSI when it's a TSI..... pop.

Cheers, gotta love vags naming convention!

Where does it say it is a K04 Ian?
I've been trying to find some hard evidence on the make of turbo as I had heard rumours that it is an IHI turbo.
I'd like to know for sure though.
-
That is an assumption on my part John. :ashamed: :sad1:
If not K04 then at least K04 sized.
-
The engine is loads different to the TSi and FSi. Manifold is built into the cylinder head.

I read that about the manifold on the head and thought surely not that can't be right, but yeah it is! Could that cause problems if you want to put a bigger turbo on and go for more power?
-
Looks somewhat restrictive!
-
Its the same on the 2.0T in the Focus ST. Apparently there to make the car more "efficient", bu they seem to be the strangle point in the tuning potential.
-
The thing is with the Focus Si we can change it out for the one on the Mondeo if we want to go big turbo, I wonder if this is going to be the norm with the integrated manifolds??
-
IHI turbo :happy2:
Can make it out in this pic if you read it upside down

ABT have made 370hp from a map so whatever the setup it works  :driver:

Cant wait to see what Gaic, Revo, MRC, APR can do with it

Me too - I've placed an order for a new S-Tronic S3 Sportback to replace my MINI as my daily driver and even with 300hp it goes very well.
It feels nothing like our DSG (standard) Mk5 GTI, it feels so much more willing to rev for a start.
Not to mention it did 41.5mpg on an extended test drive we did!!! (and 25mpg when at maximum attack)
Very impressive engine

370bhp from a piggyback solution isn't bad at all. Once the ECU's have been cracked and proper maps developed should be even higher
-
Have the likes of REVO/APR etc cracked the new ECUs in the latest GTI/vRS etc yet?
