Title: Ergh... £30 for driving in a bus lane
Post by: sub39h on November 08, 2013, 05:06:23 pm
Slightly annoyed so venting a little bit. Took a wrong turn whilst driving in unfamiliar territory in York. Ended up driving down a road with timed restrictions and got caught by a camera at a traffic light. Saw the camera when I was stopped at the red light, but was hoping I might have gotten away with it. Sadly that wasn't the case!

Being a student I really could have done without wasting that £30 and normally I'm very fastidious on the roads and don't go somewhere I'm not meant to. Bit frustrated to be caught out by a genuine mistake and less than 50yd of road.

I accidentally drove down a bus only lane in York once too. Luckily didn't get ticketed. Easily done in that city, especially if stuck behind a bus and the sat Nav tells you to drive down the bus lane!!! :fighting:

Police issue it?

So easy to do though! I went into a bus/taxi only area in Southampton but completely didn't see any signs. Drove back and saw signage in such a position it was impossible to see from the junction. I'm speaking to the council! I realised the error of my ways when all the taxi drivers were looking at and there were no other cars (or just at the golf?!)

always the way in areas you dont know.

i have been done by a speed camera 3 times in my driving history in bolton, blackpool, and chorley all because i thought the limits were 40 and not not 30.

the irony of the Bolton one was i was actually on the way to Bolton Crown Court to report back on a stolen car case (we insured the Jag in question)

Surely if you're in an area you don't know you should be extra careful?
Ignorance is not an excuse haha

Not sure about central London but I know my dad got a 60 quid fine for bus lane use in east London.
It could be more within the congestion charge area.

Challenge it.  :happy2: It will cost them the same to print off and post the standardised response of 'f-you, pay us'

If Council or Police, personally I wouldn't challenge, but be interesting to hear how it turns out. :popcornsoda:

I'm not saying ignorance is an excuse. I don't think anyone is. Clearly the cameras are there so those local to the area don't break the rules. The down side is others visiting sometimes get caught out.

But when all you're relying on is a single sign, you're late and you've got the sat nav on it's easy for a "foreigner" to go down a restricted access road. It wasn't JUST a bus lane where the road was painted bright red for anyone to see.

But I suppose you've never made a mistake on the road in your life hence your quickness to judge me and others

I once drove through a tram station in Nottingham... And got a fine. It was a mistake. I paid the fine. End of problem.

Are you mad bro?

I've never been fined for driving in a bus lane, going through a no-entry/unrestricted area/etc. I have made plenty of mistakes but when I do, I learn from it

Driving on sat nav - Obviously don't know where you are so extra attention should be paid. Foreigner or not. If you're late then that indicates you're going to be driving faster ergo you should be paying EXTRA attention.

I'm sure plenty of people who visit the town don't fall foul of the signs... I'm just hearing excuses to be honest.  :ashamed:
