Title: Bonnet Vinyl
Post by: WhiteGTI on December 03, 2008, 11:27:05 am
Right.....after seeing MAT ED30's car with the gloss black vinyl last Saturday, it has prompted me to finally go through with it - its an idea that I've had for a long time now after seeing numerous examples on the American forums, but just never got round to doing it. Hope you don't think I'm copying you Mat, I had stayed rather quiet about my intentions to do this until you posted that you were going to do it!

By chance I have found out that a company that I use for my Lotus also does vinyl, and they are offering a very competitive price!

So... I will do the roof as MAT has done, as I think he has got it spot on.

The bonnet, however, is slightly more complicated. Im not doing the whole bonnet, just the 'V' in the middle. Here are my options:

1)  Follow the two creases either side of the bonnet up, HOWEVER...this won't match with the lines created by the glossy black front grille (i.e. the creases start about 2cm wider than the gloss black of the grille) Look at your cars to understand this I guess!

2)  Ignore the creases in the bonnet and just vinyl it according to the line of the gloss black grille.

I hope I've made myself clear here, its really hard to explain!

You can kind of see from the below photo what I mean regarding the lines of the bonnet and the front glossy black part.

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm3.static.flickr.com%2F2150%2F2219894631_15d425d4fc_b.jpg&hash=c1f2ce245bcb28d4c5622156364d0c5340c53345)

Please don't post comments saying dont do this etc etc etc. I just want constructive comments as to what option looks better. I completely understand that this won't be to the liking of most of you, but ETTO I guess!!!

Thanks in advance!  :driver:

I have often looked at this Chris, and for me its a no-brainer i would definitely follow the grill lines and ignore the crease in the bonnet. I think people get talked into doing following the creases because it is more difficult to follow the grill lines.  :innocent:
What about the red stripe are you brave enough to follow that through as well this also looks cool if done right.  :driver:

Yeah, I must admit, I'm leaning towards doing as you say above! I think maybe following the crease lines makes it look a little un-alligned. We shall see what others have to say on it!

Another option:

> Start by following the grill line, then gradually merging it into the bonnet crease lines

What do you reckon to that idea??

Red stripe sounds good, i may consider once this initial decision is sorted!

Thanks Tom!!

Chris.

Thats great Mat, thanks a lot!!!

It's certainly given me some food for thought!!

I really did think your car looked sensational with the roof, and really makes it stand out in the crowd!

Yeah definitely will do, its always worth getting a comparison of price. I remember you saying that they are based all over the country? Are they in the Surrey / Berskshire area? The convenience of using the company that I originally mentioned is that they are only 10 miles away from my home..

LOL! Ok I'll give them a ring, worth finding out a ballpark figure! No harm done!

Nah, I'll get them both done at once I think. As my car is not really externally modified, I think just having the bonnet done may look a bit of out place......  :scared:

Oh, I notice that Raccoon have a centre in Maidenhead, which is really close to me, but I'm guessing that they won't know who you are if I mention your name, as you got yours done at the Leeds centre didn't you?

I'll give them a ring and see what they quote..

Cheers for your reply on golfmkv.com as well Bennylenny!  :happy2: :happy2:

I think the creases works better on your as you have the break between the lines, whereas mine wont! I think following the grille is the way forward for me!

Only choice now is whether I continue the red from the grille, or just keep it all black!!!!!!! Decisions Decision decisions!!!!!

No idea! Unless someone else on this forum knows anyone?

You could just look on another vehicle forum where the particular car is suited to vinyl, i.e. the lotus forum (SELOC) and (MLOC) - because they are cars that get vinyl'd quite a lot with stripes etc. That may give you some ideas for some places!

HTH.

Yeah, I do sometimes worry that it's going to make the car stand out that little bit 'too' much...... i.e. making it an obvious target for vandalism. Dunno!

Yeah I'll get them to hold some vinyl there, to see what it would look like.

You can never really tell just from a photograph can you..!

Hard one to get right, you would think its a no brainer keep it in line with the grille but when you see it an inch past the bonnet crease thats not right either.

Look at this bad boy !!!

This is just the start of his decision making, he has still to visit the factory in Switzerland where they make the vinyl, then once he has decided on the colour and style he has to then move in with the family of the chap who is fitting it. Only then will the job go ahead.  :signIWS:

Were looking at July before we see it on the car.  :P

Well, Ive gone and ordered it!

Chose Raccoon - same company as Mat used, from their Maidenhead centre!

Booked in for Wednesday 17 December, so will post pics up at some point after that.

Gone for the roof and bonnet in gloss black, and will follow the front grille line. No red strip continuation either.

Cant wait! I hope that its something different, but also looks cool!

Thanks for all your help above, really appreciate it!  :happy2:

Yeah price was good, they beat the other place's price, and could fit the car into the workshop when I needed to! So it just worked out well.

Thanks again Mat.

i am going to dis agree with every one else and think you should follow the lines in the bonnet , imo this will give more of a factory look and the lines a better finish !  just my opinion  :happy2:

.... x2

Most definitely. What peeps are missing is that it's only when dead straight-on in photos that the line-up with the nose mask matches. In reality it won't match up from any other angle, especially as you have a drop from bonnet down to nose mask. Also, you do read the bonnet creases and that the vinyl hasn't made it as far. Your brain will connect the black bonnet with the black nose even if it doesn't line-up exactly.

Just my opinion.

I was adamant it had to follow the grille lines but after seeing some of the photo's posted im now not so sure?

Title: Re: Bonnet Vinyl
Post by: WhiteGTI on December 06, 2008, 10:21:52 am
I see what you mean, in that if the vinyl does not follow the bonnet crease then the eye will automatically focus on it and maybe think that it is not alligned, but from some of the angles on those photos, following those creases really doesn't look too good. Although, from some angles it looks ok. Really not sure what to do!

Still got a couple weeks to decide....  :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

Yeah good point!! I'll give that a go later today!

Put a topic up on the other forum  - we'll see what they think also!

Although, Im still swaying towards following the grille lines, but as you say its hard! The more you look at one type, the more it looks ok!

Im sure in reality both will look fine and broadly similar!
