Hi All,
I have been looking at insurance quotes today and wanted to know what gains could be had from a Stage 1 R-tech remap on both a GTi and an Edition 30.
Confused.com gives you 3 options when it comes to performance increases, the top option is 26% and over, so for a GTi that would be over 252 bhp, and Ed30 289.8 bhp.
Would a GTi or Ed30 with a precat 'delete' and a performance panel filter with a Stage 1 R-tech remap reach or exceed these levels? Obviously each car is different, but from past experience what are you guys reaching?
Thanks

You could ask Niki to limit the power to a more insurance friendly level if required? :happy2:
My K03 made 248.8bhp with a panel filter and pre-cat delete with an R-Tech map.
-
Was that on a standard R-Tech map or custom?
-
It will be very very close with those figures I'd have thought. If its a custom map ask Nick to keep it within your allowed insurance limit as all's good.
:happy2:

Custom.

Thanks Guys - will run a few quotes, see what the premium difference is between less than 26% and 26% and greater..
So with the custom map, are you able to specify at what revs you want most of the power? (Never had a remap, not worth doing on my beast of a Lupo!!)
Could you for instance, say you want a map that gives major acceleration rather than greater top speed? Or even a more economy map?
Thanks

Top speed is fixed and is governed by your gearing.
The power/torque dictates how quickly you get there

With a proper custom map you can explain how you want the delivery, and where you want the power (eg: punchy midrange or with a kick at the top end). Its down to the hardware of your vehicle as to what is achievable.
If you asked for 200bhp from 2000rpm all the way to 7000rpm from a stock K03 you will be disapointed though.

Haha!!
Thanks fellas - I would ask for smooth power delivery across the rev range I'd think...is that what most people go for?
Thanks

A linear map then.
That's what I have, an R-Tech custom linear map. Tis very good and usable in everyday conditions. :happy2:
-
A yes indeed a linear map..now before I go for that, I should buy a GTi
I should be getting one around this time next year if all goes to plan...forward planning :jumping:
-
I'd look into a performance car insurer. Comparison sites are usually rubbish for mods.
-
As in going direct with the likes of Flux, Sky and Greenlight?
-
Couldn't you base the power assessment using JKMs dyno??? :P
-
Is theirs generous or underrated? :signLOL:
-
^^^^ Its known as "The Heartbreaker".
My 331 ponies on R-Tech's rollers will probably be 30 less on theirs!

If yours is 331bhp as well like mine was set up at R Tech, I can tell you, at jkm, yours will be 298bhp on theirs :signLOL:

On that basis I would have made well over 400bhp with mine at R-Tech. :happy2:

Also try bell insurance, i gave them a try after being recommended by a friend and they gave me a really good quote but as i am still waiting to sell my 1.6 Golf to move onto a GTI i haven't tried the others like green light etc.
-
Yeah I'll be trying a range of insurers and get haggling nearer the time of purchase.
I'd want them to quote me for the planned mods at the same time as the stock car, with no 'admin fee' involved when I come to make a change to my policy.
Hopefully it'll then be a case of fighting them off against each other

Can you not use insurance companies that specialise on modded cars?
-
Yes there is no problem with that Homer..that is not what I was asking about though.
This was more to have a play on confused.com who give the percentage increase figures, so wanted to know what to expect from a custom Stage 1 R-tech map with a precat delete and panel filter
-
Id wager you wont get anywhere near your cheapest quote through confused.com

Insurance companies really dont look into this sh*t guys....why bother mentioning it?

:stupid:
Tuners on the forum have had insurance companies approach them to check if ECU's have been tampered with :surprised:
It does happen and your better to be safe than sorry and potentially get a claim refused.
It's actually been cheaper to insure a modified car for me using the right insurer.
Everyone is having ECU's mapped these days, it's big business and insurance companies a) aren't daft, and b) will check everything if it means they can avoid paying out.
Well covered subject on this forum

Yes they do! :stupid:
If your driving around in a mapped car and you've not told your insurance provider, that insurance is worth (as you so politely use the word) sh*t.
Adding all the mods to mine (on a like for like basis) and also adding over 100 bhp cost next to nothing extra.
-
I know Gary from Brentacre has seen my build thread as he recongised the car!!
Insurance people, especially enthusiast oriented insurers can and do check on forums.
For me at 22 to add a power limit to my policy, is £150 or something perfectly reasonable (280bhp more than enough for a k03s or a low tuned k04).
-
^^^^ Yes, they all check the forums and if you've got nothing to hide (as it's all declared), you've nothing to worry about. I've even declared the various decals/stickers on my car.
:happy2:
-
Yeah not worth hiding any mods and invalidating your insurance.
How long does the whole mapping process take?
-
1-3 hours depends on level of tune and any other problems..
-
Is it common for non-specialised insurance companies to refuse offering polices on re mapped cars.
ie if I was insured by Direct Line, would they still cover me if I went ahead and got a stage 1 remap?
-
I've heard of a few non specialised insurance companies refusing the insure people because of re maps or power related mods.
When I add mods to my car, it's going to be very expensive to add everything because unfortunately I'm only 20 and not many specialist insurance companies will insure me - saying that though, rang Brentacre before I got the car and they quoted me 2k for fully comp with like for like cover on the mods. I thought that was very reasonable for my age and 1 year NCB.
-
Ask them but I can't imagine any High Street Insurance company will cover you, plenty of specialised around through that will. Usual suspects are Greenlight, Sky, Adrian Flux, Brentacre etc. a good policy will offer "like for like" and no amendment charge when you phone up (no matter how often you do) to add to your mod list.
