Title: Has anybody plasti dipped?...... Opted for Matt Black now
Post by: Ant.W28LKR on November 11, 2013, 10:27:47 pm
Bought some winter wheels, skoda VRS 17's. Was maybe going to go black plastic dip on black golf for the winter? Kinda stealth?. Has it been done, what you think??

I've seen vids of spray plastic dip, Is it as easy as it looks?

Forget Stealth, done to death.

GOLD FTW, end off.............next!!  :pomppomp: :pomppomp:

These are VMR 701's with "Vintage Gold" Plastidip. Gold always looks the nuts on black cars.......

Ok I've changed the heading.   I've got silver Skoda VRS Alloys for winters.  I was thinking of plastic dip spraying them.  How easy is it? The youtube vids make it look like its a walk in the park.  How easy is it to remove? I was going to go black but the gold post has got me thinking.   Just wondering how good it is to work with? Easy? Hard?  Thanks.

Did my 18's a few weeks back in gunmetal grey.  Piece of piss of a job. I did 3 Coates and they've been fine so far. No chips, scratches or marks.

I would suggest a good few hours of drying after the last coat, as I got a bit paranoid about the difference in shades. But after a few hours, they all looked equal.

Thanks for the info, Do you have Any pictures??  How Many cans did you go through doing 4 wheels? Was there an undercoat/primer used first?  Where did you buy the stuff from?  Thanks.

I've just done my track wheels in black  :happy2:

You don't need any undercoat or any prep really apart from a good clean. I gave mine a wipe down with some IPA just before spraying.

One thing I would suggest is to try and deflate the tyres and get cards round the edge of the wheel.
Also make sure the edge is really clean. All sorts of tyre silicones etc get down there and the Plastidip just won't stick.

Give the wheel and the can a bit of a warm before spraying and make sure you shake the can well. Its quite a thick spray so make sure it's not too cold.

I got mine from ukdips on eBay  :happy2:

I'll take some photos today of my finished wheels.

This is what my first one looks like...

excellent work, how many cans did you use m8?
Title: Re: Has anybody plastic dipped? Is it easy?

I would suggest masking off the bolt holes where the bolt seat(?) makes contact with the wheel and the face of the alloy that sits on the disk. I used a coin on the bolt holes and masked the rear face - you'll need to remove the coins and tape when the plasti dip is still wet though. In some circumstances the paint/plasti dip can get hot enough to melt and cause the bolts to work loose

Great response guys.

How many cans does it take for 4 wheels?

I'm liking the black. That was my original plan, black on black,  the gold looks good aswell.  Hmmmm

Probably 3 cans but buy 4 cans to be sure... I'm liking the Gold too, but not sure if the Monzas would look good in it.

Yeah that's the beauty of plastidip. No masking is needed

Just spray the rims quite thick against the tyre. That way it peels off really easy all the way round.

Hmmm they could look barryboys & very chavy??  Apart from that they'll stand out with black car and bright orange wheels.  The mrs doesn't know yet.  She already thinks I'm  :stupid:

So what's best way to do this?  Deflate the tyres, mask all round and make sure I get a good coat on the edge of rim.  What about the internal stud holes. I'm sure I read something about putting coins in them.   I've ordered new vw center badges.   Any info on tips or tricks from guys who have done it would be most appreciated.  :happy2:

…..if you need any advice let me know ill pm you my mobile number.

You WILL be fine as long as you use a bit of common sense.  :happy2:

* Clean wheels best you can. Dirt/tar/grease etc. Best to use a decent wheel cleaner spray like bilberry etc.

* Dry wheels best you can. Use a hair dryer after drying with a towel/cloth. Pay particular attention to the wheel rim/tyre valve and bolt holes.

* Best results would be to deflate the tyres to get playing cards under the rim around the wheel.
OR
* Mask the tyres up to the wheel. Leave 1mm gap. (I sprayed straight onto the tyre. It peels off easy…. IF you spray it on thick. If its thin on the tyre it will be quite a long job peeling it off)

* Use IPA and a clean micro fibre on the wheels just before spraying.

* REMEMBER to have to caps on the tyre valves. (just stick the crappy black plastic ones on)

* If you have a hairdryer you can dry the paint between coats. I found that the suggested method - do a good coat and wait 30 mins before spraying the next one, the results were not as good as my method.  :innocent:

My Method.

I sprayed a lot lighter than normal coat on the front face and then dried it straight away with my heat gun. Dont go crazy with the heat. Hairdryer will be fine

Then I did a very light coat on the inside of the wheel and dried it with the gun. I could then go back to the front straight away for another light coat and repeat.

I did this 3x before giving the front and back a good drying with the heat gun. I then had a brew break for 15mins.

I did All of the above 3x (so 9x light coats). Just keep going till you have used a full tin (you could maybe get more coats done)

It works best to do these light coats on the front, and then inside, so that way you dont run out of paint with a great looking front face and a patchy internal rim.

You could do all 4 wheels at the same time, but I did 1 wheel at a time. This way you know you use 1 tin per wheel.

HTH.

Carlo.

Perfect, I'll do one wheel at a time in the shed, I'll mask up and follow your method.  Where will I get bilberry, I think I can get my hands on TFR which is quite a strong cleaner.  Thanks for the info.

Just out of interest does anybody have any pictures of black with bright orange rims?

Post by: Ant.W28LKR on November 20, 2013, 11:04:48 pm
The tyre's needed to come of, i couldnt mask up and still get a good edge on the alloy as the tyre sits over the alloy rim.   So it would need to be tyres off then done and then tyres back on. Just too much hassle right now. Matt Black will be more forgiven than bright Orange so i'm playing it safe. sorry guys :sad1: :sad1:

I ordered it, it arrived but I just couldn't bring myself to do it as I think it would be a bodged job with tyres still on them.

Don't worry dude.

If you have any reservations about the colour it's best to change your mind before wasting £50+

You don't need to mask the tyres up really. Just make sure that you go over the overspray on the tyres quite thick. That way it will pull off the rubber tyre easily and not in hundreds of little pieces  :happy2:

Like I said at the start it was in a moment of madness when I bought the blaze Orange.  My original plan was matt Black and when the Orange arrived I just couldn't bring myself to do it.   Cheers Carlo  :happy2:

Here's a set of Monza (reps) that have been plastidipped with tyres off. The look good but not sure if black wheels will look lost on a black car.

How many coats of Plastidip are you meant to put on the alloys?  I've done two coats so far and it hides blemishes very well:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.voodish.co.uk%2Fmisc%2Fplasti-dip-2-coats.jpg&hash=df3844fe66d53a65eac45082918a44dee5ccbc69)

Think I'll give it another 2 coats and perhaps LACQUER it, can you do that with plastidip?  I know you can use the Glossifier but some American peeps are using proper Lacquer for a lasting effect... what do you reckon?

you can laquer it but it wont peel off very easliy when you want to remove it, it will come off in tiny bits, if you want it gloss you can plastidip glossefier and do a couple of coats of that

Cheers mate... have you tried a regular lacquer on plastidip and experienced that happening on removal?
I would use glossifier but reports are it's a bit lame.

I see the same company do a metalizer and pearlizer too.

Would normal lacquer not affect the removeability of the plastidip?

My attempt at spraying my chrome grill, covered well and added the plate mount too. Gonna get it on the car some time over there weekend.
Not attempted the lacquer tho.

The lacquer over plastidip kind of removes its elasticity so won't peel off in big bits, you can still get it off but very time consuming, I pretty sure there is a video of it on dip your car YouTube channel

Yeah, don't lacquer plastidip   At least I know from personal experience now... it completely destroys the hardy finish, you can literally fingernail it all off (even after curing of two days)... plus you then have to remove it like you would a sticker on a DVD case, i.e. A royal pain in the ass.  After spending an hour stripping a wheel back, then re-coating...the warning is there! :)

Love your photo RomoCop, is that the metalizer finish?  I've got those exact centres to go on too.

What's this like when the cars filthy and you clean the wheels? Will it come off? Or is it that robust that you need to peel it?

Also, makes sure the paint isn't too cold, as it spits like a b!tch, I found this out on a couple of cans... you can warm them gently in a tub of luke warm water... it sprays a nice fine mist then, something worth considering esp. with the temps dropping. :happy2:

I done mine in the garden shed. The cans of paint were room temp and it went on just fine.

I bought mine via  eBay shop but it was a company called Frost Auto.  You can build up the paint a little bit on the kerbing but not enough to make it vanish although the black hides it more.
