Title: DAB Aerial
Post by: darrenchambers on November 16, 2013, 02:53:09 pm
Hi all,

I have an RNS510 with DAB which I intend to fit into my Golf mk5, but I'm confused about the antenna. I know that there are various stick on windscreen aerials but I'd like to go for something a bit more oem

I found this on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-Oem-DAB-Aerial-With-Fakra-Extension-Cable-6m-Rns510-Dab-Rcd510-Rns315-/281207695010?pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item417948e6a2

Does anyone know if this will do the job ? And what becomes of the FM antenna on the roof ?

Thanks for all your help folks.

Regards,
Darren

I think you need a roof mount antenna in addition to that unit. You'd also be limited to an OE item as well. There is a wide choice of antennae on the market now from functional but not especially attractive internal glass mount to aftermarket DAB/FM made by the same company that make the OE FM aerial.

The one in this thread (3 plugs) is the real deal:-

Nav - Dab - Fm

For the same money!

Cheers. I already have a standard FM bee sting, could I use that with this?

Academic really because I really like the look of the 3 in 1 antenna doylebros linked to, would probably look even better in paint.

Get in touch with Eddie-NL he had a couple for sale complete with the cables for a cracking price.

It's an relatively easy job since you've already got the bee sting fitted!

No, you'll need a roof antenna capable of receiving DAB in addition to the boot-lid module.

Ok, I think I'll go for this antenna 6R0035501D. Is this an easy fit or do I need to power it somehow?

Looks like about £100+ and so far I workout that x2 fakra extension cables will be required: 1 for DAB and 1 for Nav. There should already be a third cable present for FM. Thing is though, this antenna seems to have x4 cables, is the fourth for a power supply and if so where do I pick up the feed for it?

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Phone is the maroon coloured one not used!

White one is already in the roof lining?

Blue Nav extra cable needed

Black Dab extra cable needed

Both extra cables need run to the head unit.

Thanks, that makes the job easier :)

Wonder why no power is required like most of the 3rd party antennas.

Cheers Gents

I'm sure it's supply is from the head unit via the Dab black plug!

The ones Eddie-NL was selling had TV as well.

The trick to fitting them is thin wall 22 mm spanner (short reach) and a mirror to locate the white plug stuck in the roof lining behind the airbag curtain.

Looks good painted but what did you do about the mast?

Remember:-

When fitting a 22mm short reach spanner is the job and the white plug is taped to the roof and a read of this May help

Cheers, that link will be very useful.

The mast is still in its wrapper, it looks pretty stubby and smooth. The base comes with a bung protecting the thread, left it in for the paint. I did wonder about the contrasting black mast but in fact it looks really smart. Looking forward to seeing it on the car.

Gonna have to wait though - discovered a leak under the engine today :(

I have just used the exact one in your first link and it works great. Just had to swap the connectors off the leads for my old ones and it works a treat!

:happy2: cool, so I didn't need to go to the trouble of fitting a new roof mounted aerial then

Anyway, to follow up - the aerial I fitted is absolutely wicked, I always get a brilliant signal for both DAB and GPS.

For anyone wanting to do this conversion, this is what I did:

Obtained 6R0035501D & associated Polo aerial - left the bung in screw hole and took it straight to a paint shop with my colour code cost me £50 to paint, adds up but really looks factory fit.

I needed to run x2 6m female to female fakra connectors - I got them from here:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Antennen-Verlaengerung-FAKRA-Winkelbuchse-Buchse-6m-TYP-Z-Antennenkabel-GPS-/110918256400?ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:GB:3160
They took about a week to arrive.

I then bound them together with fabric tape every 2 inches ( took ages ).

Next I removed the plastic trim that runs across the roof & undid the C-Pillars at the top. Also unscrewed the grab handles in the back.
My car is a 4 door car and I found that it is a lot easier to complete this work if you take off the 2 b-pillar trims as well, this allows the roof lining to come down a bit further and stops it creasing above the B-Pillar - it's really easy but make sure you use a magnetic screwdriver or waste an hour finding your screws like I did !

Next I removed the front nearside ( passenger side ) grab handle, removed the A-pillar trim and fed the fakra cables across the roof lining, it was awkward but it worked really well. I might also have loosened the sun visor too.

Buttoned it all up and I'm dead chuffed !

This weekend I got my new MFSW to fit :)

Cheers!

thanks for the description of how you ran the cables that has really helped me.

Can I ask why you only bought 2 extra cables, from looking at that aerial there are 4 cables/connections.  I presume you used the existing FM cable and then the 2 extra were for DAB and GPS, whats the fourth for and why didn't you use it ?

is there any documentation on the aerial and what the connections are all for, I assume FM, DAB, GPS and phone ? but would like to confirm this.

Sorry just wanting to get this right in my head before I go ahead.

thanks in advance.

reply 7 explains all, take it he didn't want to use the phone functionality.
this is where a lot of guys have got their DAB aerial

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEU-Original-Antenne-6R0035501D-Golf-VW-SKODA-Radio-Telefon-GPS-Neuuuu-/271685146748?
becareful of the newer polo aerial as it will not pass through the roof hole.

That's right, I didn't use the 4th cable for the phone cradle, nowadays that's defunct. Instead I installed the Skoda phone module under the drivers seat and connected via bluetooth and the head unit.

Be extra careful if you run the cables across the roof, it's easy to bend the roof lining in the middle so I'd definitely remove the centre pillars.
When you're half way through it looks a right mess but just brave it out and press on, it's really not all that bad; take your time.

What I would say is that if you think the aerial would look better painted ( it almost certainly will ) then get it done up front - you won't want to have to take it out again once it's in.

Cheers,
Daz

I ran mine same way as Darren and had the same fun  :signLOL:
I just loosened the top of B & C pillars at the top and pulled them forward to tuck cable behind. I didn't touch the grab handles, just tucked cable behind upper roof lining edges. Worst bit was getting FM connector out to swap over, a mirror is a good idea, as you cant see what you are doing!!
I had to get someone else to hold new aerial on roof whilst fitting nut underneath.

I was hoping to fit the 2015 model year Polo's aerial to my Mk5 but as discussed in the topic I'll link to below it has a different fitment, I'm still tempted to go ahead though.

Nice one, that looks ace and just what i need! :happy2: thanks for the part number!

Think the 2015 version maybe alittle too involved for my use but I'd imagine a competent bodyshop could fit cheap enough if you're not feeling brave.

I've just fitted a Calero OEM one, same fitment as the golf. 2 seconds to fit and has both water seals as the OE one.

if you're after complete OEM hidden away, I used the MK6 Tailgate DAB unit and just threaded it through the boot and headliner. Kufatec sell a complete set for it.
