Hi everyone!
I'm about to order these 6000K HID's for my 2007 MK5 Golf!
http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7-new-canbus-terminator-hid-kit-slim-35w/
Does anyone have an opinion on these and anything I should be wary of? E.G VAGCOM etc?
All help is much appreciated!
Thanks
Vish

Just stick with bulbs if you have normal headlights.
-
If you put HIDs in standard headlights when you go to start the car it would unfortunately explode.

ermmmm... why...?
-
You will just blind people and they look pap!
-
My friend has them fitted in his mk5 and they look pretty good IMO, and they don't look blinding when driving towards him, the light points towards the floor

HID's are IMO rubbish. Always too bright and can't wait for them to be an MOT fail.
However fitting them will be fine, but when you use them children will die. True story.
-
I have had several sets in different cars , you can get the same kit on ebay for half that price , from china . But i never had any issues in delivery
They are rather good in this weather , but you will get flashed at from time to time and the balast can fail and so can bulbs , but they are so cheap just buy another compete set , in the last few years i have had one bulb failure and one balast failure so not to bad and mine get a lot or hours of use
My daily hack i put a 55w set in low beam and 35w set on high beam , all good :-)
-
You shouldn't get any canbus issues proving they are the correct fitment 35w (could do 55w if you want but not strictly legal). If they do fail, resistors will be required.
If you got standard headlights think about H7R hids as they are specifically designed for reflector housing. Look for canbus kits but in practice they are partially meaningless
Mine just pass a mot ;p
-
Thanks for the more useful replies guys!
And EDD666999 , regarding the children dying if i install HID's... I guess we all have to make sacrifices, I'm sure they'd understand!

I've looked into these H7R kits, and it's strange, because when I filter by Make, Model, and Year, there are no H7R kits appearing for my golf, just H7's, but here is a H7R kit on the same website I found by simply searching...?
http://www.hids-direct.co.uk/h7r-canbus-terminaror-hid-conversion-35w-kit/
More or less the same kit just H7R. Whats the difference and should it still fit?
Thanks

" vec-c " for 10% off
-
I have spotted LED bulbs on ebay and have been wondering about trying these
My bike lights are insane so with mutliple LEDS these may be good enough for car lights
But the lumens levels look lower from i can can make out , perhaps they are only for fogs
-
" vec-c " for 10% off
10% off the kits i was looking at using that code?

Tried it on that h7r kit n worked
-
aha cheers!
And whats the diffrernce between the H7 and H7R ones then?
want to order by 6 hours ago so need to get the facts down lol
-
I have no idea, maybe one kills more children than the other?

H7 will fit thr golfs so will H7R. Literally the only different with H7Rs is that they are specifically designed for reflector hounsing on the lights (ie: not projector lenses). You can still put in H7 HIDs.

Yep that's correct. The R stands for radioactive so you get more! loll!!
-
So the light produced should look the same from the drivers seat, but I will blind less people essentially? And I'll order some H7R's then! :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :driver: :D

Essentially yes! H7s just need to be positioned down rather than just stick them in and running round as you put them in, but yeh H7R are designed to stop dazzle!!
And ofcourse slightly more expensive :p
-
Thats the thing, the H7R's were like £3 less, but paid for them now! Very excited lol

Oh cool! Nice!! I want photos!

H7rs are just normal H7 bulbs with some black paint on the bulb.
They still give a POOR beam pattern (they would fail an MOT)
Regardless or not they are very distracting especially when driving on bumping roads or when a vehicle is coming down hill towards you.
I am asking you as an adult to buy some quality HALOGEN bulbs. Otherwise you are basically saying "Hey, I'm ignoring advice, and don't care about other people!"
Edit: Nevermind, see you've already bought them.
Please fit them, drive between two brick walls and provide a photo.

Will do! And i don't want to come off as some ignorant nob, thats why i was trying to source the correct ones for my car before buying, and get multiple opinions.
Will take a photo like you suggested, if they have sh*t nasty glare I'll send them back or sell them on and try and find some "quality" halogen bulbs, but i doubt i'll find any that compare to the nice looking and revealing light of the HID's?
-
could of sent you some h7r bulbs--took them out of mine aftre 1hr
-
this is a h7r bulb
http://www.hids4u.co.uk/h7r-anti-glare-replacement-hid-bulbs.html?gclid=COeMr7eY77oCFSnjwgodDSsAoA

Can i ask why you took them out?

You are honestly wasting your money.
It's selfish of you to run HIDs in the INCORRECT headlights. It gives everyone a bad name.
There are plenty of "quality" bulbs, Phillips Ultras, Osram nightbreaker +, all give a wonderful crisp light.
And to be honest, IMO, HIDs in incorrect headlights look tacky. It's not about how bright the light is, it's about how it can be directed and you simply can't direct the intense light properly with a stock reflector unit...

In a Mk4, exact same problem..

There is a corsa that drives near me, passes me almost every night towards work. It looks like he drives round on high beam. So every time I see him I flash him a lot. He will never change.
People won't change their minds about HID's because from the drivers seat they look fine. When they get blinded they think "HID's fitted incorrectly" when in fact all HID's are like that.
-
took them out as the light beam pattern shone every where but they did light the road up well :signLOL:Main reason was I pulled up by the police and he told me to take them out :signLOL:
-
Get some projector headlights
-
Hey, I'd go with 4500k, looks a lot more oem then the blue tint from the 6000k and gives a nicer cut off IMO
-
k is just the kelvin rating of the bulb.
It does not effect cut off.
-
Now I'm regretting buying them after hearing all this feedback :/
I will test fit them asap as they arrived today, I'll take some photos before and after and of the cut off and on coming POV.
-
Well we did warn you.
-
You've made a big mistake ever buying these. I had H7r bulbs for around 3 days and they were just as bad as normal h7s.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fi402%2Fdanmaytee90%2Fphoto3_zps86834c02.jpg&hash=48c3fdd850050ced6670a93316fbc9b8afd560bb)
That's a comparison of one with a Osram Nightbreaker. Absolutely terrible and scatted light everywhere. I felt like a complete bellend for driving my car with them even if it was just a few days.
-
:ashamed: Wish I waited a bit longer for these answers! I ordered them out of excitement :(

Maybe, but if theyre blinding to others then ofc i will have to take them out, ill leave one in and do an oncoming approach in a mates car and see :/
-
Make sure you do it coming round a bend as well. As that is one of them most likely times you will blind someone when both cars are at an angle and not completely facing each other.
-
I can pretty much assure you that HID's in reflectors without self levelling will be a nuicanse to oncoming traffic - when going uphill and downhill, around corners, when in front of cars, when behind cars - they look crap too, sorry to say.
-
-
omg that's so last year!
-
Looks like the f*ckers are going back then ;(
-

They are not technically illegal. They have interpreted the legislation the way they have although it is not an offence to simply put the hids in.
-
Without opening up a can of worms (and this is the only post on this subject I will make as I'm sick of it frankly :indifferent:)
For Type approval you are supposed to have Washers and Auto Leveling or self-adjutsing rear suspension.
There are some cars that came FROM THE FACTORY (mainly Japanese Imports) which were not subject to this.
For the sake of the MOT the BEAM PATTERN needs to be correct. You could have nuclear power stations for headlights technically so long as they had the correct cut off and beam pattern.
Officially if your headlights are under 2000 lumens you don't need washers or levelers, if they are over 2000 lumens you do, however there is no accurate way of testing the lumens in a garage, so they apply the "lowest common denominator" which is simply the beam pattern - In short you can fit a HID kit as so long as the cut off is correct (which it will be in the Hella housings or quality aftermarket Projector units, they will NOT be in the factory reflector headlights) your vehicle will pass an MOT.
I have this in writing from VOSA directly.

I was going to comment on te potential issues after saying technically fine but as you can of worms!!
-
Might look into a quality set of hella's then, but they're so damn expensive
-
Quality always is.
-
Suppose so :(
-
There's still a solution if you are willing to put ~350£ extra in the project.
Buy some GTI replica headlights: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HELLA-headlights-black-VW-Golf-V-MK5-Jetta-MK3-R32-GTI-front-lights-Xenon-Look-/160887349805?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AGolf|Plat_Gen%3AMK+V&hash=item2575a2222d
They have lenses... OR, get a projector retrofit done. I have some Mini H1 Bi-Xenon projectors laying around and they are giving an excellent cutoff (a lot of color and very sharp). The output is also a lot better than regular PnP kits that people buy, as these projectors are made for HID's.
If your headlight isn't permaseal, the installation of the projectors is a PITA! Here's some pics: http://dl.vrod.dk/images/xenon/minih1/
I run original HID's on my Plus, soon to get my old Hella sh*t projectors replaced with newer replica models that blows them out!
-
Hella's cut off is far better than the Depo ones... the cost savings have to come somewhere ;)
I've seen aftermarket Hella xenons and Depos side by side and it's a big difference.
-
Always wanted to put in HIDs but settled for LEDs due to reflector housing.
