I'll add to this as the day progresses - 24 chosen because the inside front and inside back covers will display 4 pics each this year (2014).
HIGH RES IMAGES WANTED when I have posted which ones, which must be free of any photographer's logos etc - All photos will be credited outside the image area.
The front cover....

great shot for the front there; where the heck was that taken, very industrial.

....You will have to ask valle whose car it is
Like last year's front cover by richwig83, it stood out and was a no-brainer to choose.

*cough* Well yes, both Neil and I have chosen one of mine. If anyone thinks it's unfair and not impartial, then tough sh*t because there's a lot of work involved in producing the design and artwork for the calendar and it's my reward. We didn't choose one of mine until all the others were chosen first.

....It's a great shot - Very strong composition. Your other 2 were good quality too but didn't tell the slammed air ride story so well. You know I'm personally not a fan of air slams but it's a great photo image and each to their own - We're all enthusiasts!
I may decide to Photoshop out the white pole but am not sure yet - It's still a great pic with it in.

....The version posted is lo-res but the image is such that changing the res etc in Photoshop probably will be okay due to the subject's lighting and greys colour palette.
I'll send it to and speak with Neil about it. I really want to use this shot if we can. I'll be able to crop out the Rich Wigley signature on the image itself.
However, it's currently perfect for us to apply a creative green industrial look to it

We haven't decided which car for which month yet.

Some good pics. I do think that hurdys own entries were better that the one you've chosen yourself. It's not really calendar worthy IMHO.
-

....They are good but are generally exposed to feature the scenery rather than the car and hence the overall character of the car is reduced, almost lost.
Everyone will have their own different opinion about which photos will make the 'best' calendar. This is exactly why Neil and myself insist on having complete control on these decisions, otherwise it's simply too much hassle to be involved in this at all and very time consuming and even more frustrating when the forum keeps losing connection (as it did during Neil and I making decisions last night).
Anyway, I did post that we might use one of his 'scenic' set as well.
-
awful lot of "snap shots" picked... :innocent:
-
Well, first of all thank you for making me apart of the next years calendar! :notworthy:
I think I am very lucky I have a very photogenic car color but, I have to keep pushing for great angles and shots to make sure I will be in the 2015 calendar also
I've sent the photos in high resolution. If there are any issues please write here or PM or over mail.
Can't wait to get my hands on the finished product!
:congrats:
-
awful lot of "snap shots" picked... :innocent:
....I've seen your professional photography on your web site and it's truly excellent for a great many reasons. However, we didn't choose the photographs you submitted. I will say that if we had chosen one of yours it would have most likely been as a front cover but then the "snap shots" as you call them might have seemed poor by comparison. It's not an art calendar. A couple of your submitted pics would look better framed and on a wall rather than in a down-to-earth car forum calendar, in my opinion.
-
I don't mind who is picked.
However.
This is going to be a calender that is on display at your house, work/office, garage, whatever. People will look at it and make their judgements/assumptions. It represents the forum, the members, and in a way, VW Golf drivers and enthusiasts.
The quality/composure of some of the shots chosen is not of a quality I would personally consider right for a calender. I'm not saying anything negative about the CARS chosen (as not a single car picked I would deem "un-caldenerable" - just the photos of said cars.
That's my opinion.
However I'll still buy one. And RR and the other guy have done a lot of work putting it all together. No-one has the same taste in cars, pictures, etc, and there's always going to be people who are unhappy.
So let's all cut people a break on what's picked and why. :happy2:
-
awful lot of "snap shots" picked... :innocent:
This ^^^^ I had the same gripe last year, but yes.... It's all a bit "snapshot-tastic" unfortunately.
-
Most photos are spot on like! Done a good job. :congrats:
But I think if you picked the best photo from each person submitting and called a vote then no one could complain..?
-
.
For those who have a "gripe" (which actually means "something trivial") about either last year's calendar or this year's, Neil and I can only choose from the photographs which are submitted.
It depends how you define "calendar worthy" but if more photographs which might be described as "calendar worthy" by some (and not "snapshot-tastic") had been submitted then we probably wouldn't be having this discussion.
If one photographer such as professional jonm had photographed all the cars then I am sure that the calendar as a whole package would meet a "calendar worthy" standard but be honest guys, such a photographic project simply isn't practical without being funded to cover the photographer's and others costs. If every member of this forum who submitted their car photos was a professional photographer then I expect "calendar worthiness" would also be achieved.
However, the calendar represents the forum membership and their cars. It also gives members an opportunity to photograph their cars to their best ability, to enjoy doing so, and to enjoy seeing their efforts published. It's clear to me from the PMs I have received so far today that most folks here are genuinely very happy with our selection.
To put down other people's efforts as "snapshot-tastic" is frankly very disrespectful to other enthusiasts here. I would even go further and say it appears to stink of photographic snobbery.
Neil and I have chosen a group of photographs which are (a) reproduceable (b) representative (c) sit comfortably together as a collection. All Neil and myself can do is work with what photos we are offered.
-
Call it what you want robin... A snap shot, is a snap shot!! The cover photos is absolutely brilliant.... That's what all the others should be like. Purpose taken photos...... Not just snap shots!!!

Don't think you meant me :p

If you would like to know why we chose your photo of Thor's car over your photo of your car, I'd be happy to tell you.
-
Don't think you meant me :p
....Sorry, I meant jonm, the wedding photographer. I'll edit my earlier post.
-
And just for the record. I wouldn't consider the photo I took of thors car to be up to par either... So don't think I'm pointing fingers.
-
And just for the record. I wouldn't consider the photo I took of thors car to be up to par either... So don't think I'm pointing fingers.
....Whether technically inferior or not, it's got a lot more going for it than the one of your car you submitted this year. Why? Because it's much more real-life and dynamic and less studio setup. The version you did last year with Greeners hanging out the window was the best car snap of yours I have ever seen - It was absolutely brilliant, not due to anything technical but because it was emotive. Thor's car pic has far more emotion and that's far more important than anything else in a photograph.
-
I didn't ask for an explanation robin..... I don't need you to validate my photography. Thanks for trying tho.
-
I think we are making Robin's and Neil's work a lot harder by sharring our thoughs so soon.
I think the best way is to have the calendar delivered and than give a constuctive feedback to it's creators.
If I were envolved in the calendars' creation and even before it got out I would have received negative feedback, I would have have been a bit fed up. I think it helps if we put ourselves in Robin's and Neil's shoes before giving a feedback...
And as another remark, please remember we are each unique and we don't have the same taste. So I guess each one of us would have chosen different photos (me included).
So far each calendar was a true joy to watch and there is no reason to expect anything from this one.
Really looking forward to seening the finished product!
-
I didn't ask for an explanation robin..... I don't need you to validate my photography. Thanks for trying tho.
....By you challenging our choice of forum calendar photographs you put your own efforts up for validation in that context.
I accept and respect that our views and choices may differ but I feel obliged to respond openly and frankly.

Don't think you meant me :p
....Sorry, I meant jonm, the wedding photographer. I'll edit my earlier post.
Wasn't a moan! I feel honoured you even call me professional ;)
-
Good hard work again by two forum members and I, and many others thank them for this. Thanks to Robin and Neil.....looking forward to seeing the finished product again. :happy2:
Food for thought.......If you've got nothing positive to say...maybe just say nothing at all!

Very defensive comment for what was, really, not a very derogatory or negative comment IMO.
It's a forum people can share their thoughts. Normally I am pretty blunt but even tried to word my post very positively. Richard's post wasn't exactly mean or anything.
I don't think anyone is "having a dig". All been escalated a bit too far imo :(
:drinking:
-
Thank you to Neil and Robin for your efforts once again.
Don't like it = Don't buy it. Simple as that really. :happy2:
-
As above.
Sales figures as always will tell you if people like it!
Plus those photos mean different things to different people - some people love wheels, lowered or whatever.
If it helps the forum put me down for two!
Well done to those members who put the time and effort in. :notworthy:

....Thanks, your encouragement is very much appreciated :drinking:
I'll post a link for calendar orders once Neil has started that thread.
Trying to support the very differing loves of forum members for their cars is exactly what we have attempted to represent in our choice of fine photographs and snapshots.
-
I think you cannot win on this, yes sometimes they are not the best quality pics but then again they capture atmosphere, this year we seem to have had less submissions so the choice is even harder
other years there have been votes on this and quite frankly that had very little to do with the quality of pics or cars included
end of the day Robin does this for the love of the forum, whilst we don't always agree with the choices we should respect that and he is old enough and cantankerous enough to take it on one of his chins :happy2:

...."had very little to do with the quality of pics or cars included" is exactly why I have not wanted to be involved if choices were down to public voting - Then it really might be ALL 'snapshot-tastic' and furthermore photos which reproduced poorly in print.
I must go and look in the mirror - I didn't notice more than one chin when I last looked!

Edit: wrong thread.
-
.
As richwig has now decided to withdraw his previously given permission to allow his photograph of Thor's car (submitted by Thor and then selected), we have made another selection.
This is the withdrawn photo....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRED_INK%2FPrinted_Projects%2FrichwigThor.jpg&hash=dde86d4069bce5adaf00ca5af34dbe927f169afe)
And this is our substitute photo submitted by jonm....
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm9.staticflickr.com%2F8236%2F8526185526_551b6da713_z.jpg&hash=765520691133ed62d35c260b2db029ab6e5a5621)
I make no secret of the fact that unfortunately I find richwig's behaviour in this matter to be selfish and petty, even spiteful and not at all helpful to the forum producing a calendar which will donate its proceeds to the forum itself.
I expect that having submitted the photo of his car, Thor will be disappointed but I have no doubt that he won't lose any sleep over it as I know him to have a broad perspective on life. Still, richwig clearly didn't think to discuss his intentions with him first.
-
Actually Robin... i contacted Chris this morning to tell him that the photo could be used. Up to you... do what you want.

Actually Robin... i contacted Chris this morning to tell him that the photo could be used.
....So you realised how you had behaved and had a change of heart. What changed your mind? Or should I say who?
The result of your behaviour is that we now have to lose a photo.

Actually Robin... i contacted Chris this morning to tell him that the photo could be used.
....So you realised how you had behaved and had a change of heart. What changed your mind? Or should I say who?
The result of your behaviour is that we now have to lose a photo.
Do as you pwease Robin. I messaged chris this morning and told him that the photo could be used. I realised that I would be pissing off the wrong person if i wasn't to allow it.
You rubbed me up the wrong way last night so toys were thrown out of the pram.... I have since collected nearly all of them. :happy2:

personally i think the FB dialogue has not place in this thread and should be removed
Ohh its been reported already Andy. A last ditch attempt to try and make me look like the bad guy and foul my name.
-
I wont comment on some of the 'banter' exchanged on this thread but having seen only the images that are selcted I think the calender will prove to be a cracker - I will definately be purchasing one :) Good work to all involved :)

people have disagreements and opinions, lessons for all parties can be learned and hope Robin and you both make the Christmas meet shake hands raise a glass and we all move on :drinking:

Cant make it unfortunately. At least youll have something to talk about! :signLOL:

I have the 2013 calendar in the bathroom. It has pleasured me greatly every time I wiped myself this year.

....Is it just me who thinks this doesn't sound quite right and/or is too much information?
Neil, I think we must have sent him the VAG Hot Babes calendar by mistake.

I worry for you PJ. As I was Miss October this year, I now feel violated.
Anyhow, back on topic.........
Some belting shots peeps. Love Valle's one, a more than worthy cover pic IMHO. My Calendar will have pride of place in the Man Cave.
:happy2:
-
The only draw back with this calendar is:-
I'm going to be put too shame - After looking at how clean you all keep your vehicles, I feel the only way I could present mine to a similar standard, would be to learn photoshop!
How do you use them and have them looking so good? :notworthy:
-
Calendar looks good Robin.
well done to those involved :happy2:

....As you will have read, we then chose one of your photos after richwig 'threw his toys out of his pram' (his term, not mine) and now he has re-allowed his permission to use his shot of Thor's car.
As a result I'm trying at the moment to revise design layouts to accommodate your photo as well. Can you let me have a hi-res version please (ZIP to send?) to:

Very acceptable - It's a photo I like.

Robin,
Old Red looks mega cool in this shot.
How was it lit? Pretty effective I'd say.
BTW Well done on all the collective effort you and Neil have undertaken for this project.

^ Artworks finished for the A4 wall-hung calendar version - Just the month pics to decide with Neil.
CD-case version next. john_o, your photo will definitely be in that but didn't make the A4 version final - A question of balanced looking images in the layout, no other reason.
-
tis all cool Robin, im easy either way :happy2:
