Title: High pitched beeps
Post by: Meallbhan on November 20, 2013, 06:14:57 pm
Evening all

The other day when I started the car, as soon as I turned the key, the car gave me 4 or 5 maybe 6 high pitched sharp beeps in very quick succession. I'm not sure but they seem to come from behind the dash.

The car did this before, 3 or 4 times maybe a year or so ago but I'd forgotten about it coz it didnt happen again. But it has now.

The car seems to be totally fine. Has anyone experienced the beeps or know what they are/mean?

I'm guessing its the ice warning! Anything below 4 degrees it beeps away when you put the ignition on.

The 'bong' for low ambient temperature warning is just the one... could it possibly be the seatbelt beeper?

No its not the low temp warning, I know that one very well! Nor is it the seat belt bonger coz mine is unplugged.  These noises are totally different to my beeps though. My ones are high pitched, and if you say beepbeepbeepbeepbeep as fast as you can, thats quite close to how they are. Odd.

Do you leave your car in reverse? Have you got reverse sensors? Are your friends handy with duct tape?

I've had this recently too. Very intermittent and seems to be coming from my head unit (the standard mk5 nav unit)

It reminds me of the noise aftermarket units make when a code is required.

May be the cold weather is changing the sound but low outside temp is my vote or the cars haunted. :scared:

You will get a beep for any warnings from the dash cluster.
If you have low fuel, service light on and it's under 4 degrees you will get 3 beeps in a row.
Even though I've owned a Mk5 for 3 years it still always makes me panic a little if they come on when driving.

My old Audi A3(mk4 golf chassis) used to do this, It was something to do with the alarm,

or is your car fitted with a tracker, Could be a warning that the internal battery need replacing?

Haha that happens to me too. Although mines only done 1 beep when under 4 degrees.

Yes, that is correct
I said if you have low fuel, need service and it's under 4 degrees, you'll get beep.
one beep per thingy.

I had this before with an Audi...it turned out to be the low battery in the alarm siren.

You often find this occurrs when the ambient temperature cools.

I only mention it as, Vw/Audi VAG etc....... Sorry I don't known if it is the same on a mk5 ?

Thanks for all the responses,

Ok, for definate I know its not low fuel, low temp, service needed or a reversing sensor (not fitted).

I thought too that it may be something to do with the stereo. But I don't think so now because it would be too much of a coincidence as I just changed the headunit a couple of months ago, and for the two units to make the same noise so randomly, nah.

The alarm was another choice of mine. Its just the standard alarm and there is no tracker fitted to the car. Where do I find the battery that could need changed? But again,  the beeps are so utterly random when they happen, I'm thinking the alarms battery is probably ok because the beeps would happen more often if it wasn't.

Someone above suggested the car could be haunted . . . .

I wonder what it could be?

Sometimes I pull off with hand break slightly on, very quick beeps are heard.

Locking and unlocking chirps can be set on vcds I had mine done by xjay

Maybe this has been set on your car but isn't working correctly?

Also I think some alarms beep lots of times when you unlock the car if it's alarm has been set off whilst its been locked? It may have an aftermarket alarm that you don't know of?

I tried the handbrake thing today, nope, not that.

I have had the car for over 2 years now and never once has the car made a sound when either locking or unlocking eg chirps from the alarm. I've never actually heard the alarm.

I don't think it has an aftermarket alarm that I don't know about coz the person I bought the car from was the only owner and he kept reciepts for absolutely everything he bought.

Its obviously nothing serious coz I'm sure I would have noticed, its just confusing.
