Title: Huge increase in fuel consumption. Possible causes?
Post by: Craigh1983 on November 26, 2013, 02:00:06 pm
I've noticed over the past 6 months my fuel consumption has gone up massively. Usually from a full tank of petrol I would get around 350 miles out of it. Lately I'm getting about 300 and I'm not driving any different than I normally do.

I've recently had a new turbo.. Dv valve revision G. New pcv. My MAF is fairly new too.

What else could be causing this?

Thanks
Craigh

Colder, denser air contains more Oxygen which allows the ECU to add more fuel to the mix, for more performance.

^^  I made that up, any truth in it?

Could be. But it was still down a lot even when the weather was a lot warmer.

Weather  :happy2:

Enjoy the colder air giving you a few more horses  :signLOL:

But also couple it with using electric bits in the car more like heated seats, demisters etc

Bloody weather! I wonder how much more fuel I'm gonna use during the real bad winter we are supposed to be having this year. Maybe 100 miles a full tank lol

It's those warm up times, fuel consumption would be better if you started the car and never stopped driving lol

I'll have to try that one morning when I drive by the car park at work. I will just carry on driving :)

I'd love to get 300 miles out mine... It's getting worse and I think this tank il be aiming for 240 ish miles... I've done everything I can to restore the mpg but it's still getting worse.. Currently says 23.7 mpg :-(

That's encouraging to know I'm not the only one, although I'd rather my £70 last longer than 300 miles.

Still, that's part of the fun. Bring on the cold weather...

The colder weather definitely effects my range I'm currently getting around 200 to 220 to a tank. Stage 2 and a fair amount of stop start traffic and spirited driving.  :signLOL:

What condition are your spark plugs in mate?
How about the cam follower?
Also, are you using decent fuel? Tesco 99 / Optimax
Any error codes?

I've got a DSG and I get about 210 miles out of a full tank.  According to my calculations, my MPG is around 18.5 with just town driving.  My car was recently serviced, with literally everything changed.

Bloody hell,T thought my MK6 dsg 'R' was bad at 22mpg around town but it does'nt seem bad compared to that.I got 33mpg on a 20 mile motorway run the other day as well! :jumping:

Does it move freely when the handbrake is released - brake calipers are favourite for binding - simple check, common problem!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but on the subject of weather... Could it make the turbo whistle a bit cause of the colder denser air? My turbo has started a whistle over the last few days whilst it's been cold outside... I never noticed it in summer and this us my first winter with the car.
I've got no loss of power just this strange induction type whistling just before the DSG changes gear....  :scared:

Not too sure about spark plug condition but car runs great. They are due to be changed next service. Just had a service done and can follower was fine as only had that changed 6 month ago.

I also use tesco 99 fuel at the min.
