You should be able to program "clean" keys with Vag Com. However, there's a chance that you cannot reprogram a key that has already been programmed before. I recall trying to do something similar without success. You should give it a try though.
-
No you should not give it a try. Vcds does not program or prepare the dealer key. It will only reprogram a key previously programmed to the same car.
I can supply or program a new key though if you'd like to PM your details.

^ignore this guy hes just trying to screw people out of money, i got my SKC with Vag commander and programmed 1 brand new key and 1 preused flip key ( with new immobiliser chip) using VCDS all went fine

It would depend on the model year too
after 2006 you wouldn't be able to
it also depends what you call a fair price
I added a key to my 2012 car for £26 in total, is a locksmith going to charge that? No, they won't as they are offering a service which needs to make a profit.
VW Charge nearly £200 so if an independent locksmith charges £100 it is cheaper and makes the VW price look like a rip off.
Is it a rip off... no because they have larger overheads and the price is set by VW who will take a cut too

The day it goes wrong using ripped off tools with no support I will laugh at you and charge double to fix it. I've repaired at least 4 cars in the last 2 months because people like you know best . It's ok to risk on your own car, just don't advise other people to do the same.

I paid an independent a reasonable price (under £100) to reprogramme my key.
I suggest you make you own mind up, but consider the following:
15 posts, and already hurling abuse.
Or
Thousands of posts, and universally positive feedback.
I don't know either of the above members, but I know who I'd trust.

I have no problem with people offering a service, if i didnt feel confident to do i myself then id happly pay someone £80 to come out and do it as it is alot less than the dealers, what i do have a problem with it you giving bad information to people to try and scare them into paying you.

Where are you based? I had A fella called Craig come to my house and supplied New 3 button flip key cut and coded to the mrs mk5 gt for £80
