Evening all,
I intend to replace my cam follower tomorrow now I have the m8 spline bit.
Have looked on here and around the net but cannot see specifically how to release the HPFP pressure with the banjo bolt setup.
There is some guidance about removing fuse and running engine until splutter but some say this is not necessary. I can't see an alternative method.
Has anyone done this or know how to release the pressure?

I assumed that once the pressure is relieved from valve you just remove the banjo bolt.

Perhaps I am over thinking it.
There are 2x metal pipes one with the banjo bolt and one attached to the file line.
If the fuel line one releases the pressure then that's fine.
Don't have the schrader valve like the newer pumps.

That guide is great but has the schrader valve to release the pressure whereas mine doesn't.

Not any harder - just be careful when first starting the thread off when refitting the pipes!
Finally, a cold engine is a must for safety reasons!

Cheers, plan to do it tomorrow morning after car sat overnight. Will be stone cold and will not be opening the drivers door!

Right well that was not too bad at all.
Leaving the car overnight and not opening the drivers door meant there was only a very very small dribble of fuel and minimal pressure. Put a tea towel underneath to capture fuel and bolts which worked well!
Bodged taped 8m spline tool did the job and it took around 20mins.
As it happens the cam follower/cam looked ok but as I didn't know when it had been done at least I have peace if mind now.

Mine is the same system as yours - without the schrader valve.
I just undid the bolt slowly until I heard it hissing.
I didn't remove the fuse or set the cam timing like it says on some guides and never had any problems.
Make sure you have an old towel to mop up the fuel though!
Also don't open the door as it primes the fuel pump.

No worries thanks for response. Struggled to find many specific banjo bolt cam follower threads so hopefully this will help someone else.

Hi gang
I've just changed my cam follower tonight and I have banjo bolt but pressure relief valve too.
It took about 40 mins and I found it an ok job. I did break to retaining clasp off the left hand cable connector on the pump so I had to bodge it in place with a self tapper for now :scared: I will order a new one.
See pics below for wear, Im presuming its the original on a 55 plate with 66k, blufin stage 1. Not too bad, but the hardened coating has worn so I'm presuming I changed it at the right time?!

Yeah that connector is a pain in the arse! I struggled with that too and could do with a new one.
Mine was like this car had 89k and is standard. Not one done in the history so presume it is the first change.........

That's significant wear. It's a good job you changed this when you did... once the hardened layer is worn through I'm guessing it doesn't take long to fail (there's a reason it there). I'm at the stage now when I check it every year and replace as necessary. Crazy that most garages still don't seem to recognise this issue.

Am going to do mine tonight. Mine is the early one with 2 metal pipes. I have read something about replacing a banjo bolt and housing as well. Is this right or do you just go carefully

Give yourself plenty time - Slow and steady or don't start it!
The job is a nothing job really but if you strip any threads it will become expensive!

The whole design of the cam follower is crap to be honest. Hence VW changing it to a roller follower instead, still not a brilliant design in my eyes.

Right I changed my cam follower today and mine is the early two metal pipes. No issues at all pics of the old one bellow. From what I can see in the history it was the original one and as you can see started to show some ware but not as much as I thought.

When I did the two fuel lines the right one was no issue as we have all the same and know how to do that. The left one I undid the torx bolt from the bottom of the union. There did not appear to be any washers. Removed the bolt and changed the follower and then used the same one. From looking inside the hpfp there is a thread that it went in to and did not appear to have to cut its own. Little trick was to use a separate torx from another set and then slide a small adjustable spanner over it with some tape on the bottom to stop it falling out this making a small socket set up to allow access.
When you look at it the head of the bolt I removed is the round bit at the bottom underneath the joint on the left pipe. Hope that makes sense. Took half hour.

I am thinking to change my cam follower as well. Can anyone tell me what are the side effects of a failed cam follower? How can i understand that the follower has failed and it needs to be changed?

Fuel cuts are a symptom.

From what I understand if it fails it can write the engine off from secondary damage. For the sake of £25 for the part change it for piece of mind

did this a few months back. Big tip, leave the drivers door closed. i left it open and it primed the in tank pump causing fuel to come out even after the fuse for the HPFP was removed.
the way i did it was to remove the fuse, run the engine till it stalls to remove fuel pressure, and then use the schraeder valve to remove the remaining pressure. The rest is quite simple after that.

I left door closed and parked overnight. Opened bonnet through window and when I undid hpfp had just a dribble of fuel no issues.
