Title: My Edition 30
Post by: SlammedGTi on December 08, 2013, 03:42:47 pm
Well after another long search for the right car I have nailed it on the head again, so pleased.

Set out looking for a MK5 Golf Gti in black/grey pref, 3 door manual and 17' alloys, not the chav 18', for the right price with Cambelt, Flywheel and Clutch, you wouldn't think that was hard, but it was.

I managed to get myself all of the above with the bonus of it being the ED30 and then a triple bonus of R32 brakes, Eibach springs and new shocks and a Miltek exhaust, very happy. Spotted it while I was away in Thailand so I hoped that when I got back to England it wasn't sold. On my arrival back to the UK it turned out to be from my colleagues friend, who's a dealer. Went to view straight away and left a deposit there and then with a cracking' deal of friend discount.

I was so happy with the purchase my eyes glazed over on viewing and I ended up checking nothing electrical wise, however all is good.

Another bonus was the Spec, nearly every factory option bar the bucket seats (if they we're an option?) IIRC.

Plans: Being a KO4 and living 3 miles from Revo, it'll be rude not to get it mapped. This'll take place in Spring I would have thought.

Enough of the bore, I could go on forever, never really been PLEASED with a car purchase as much as this.

Hello Edition 30.. Excuse Dirty.

Fantastic, I'm recently in the same boat with a newly purchased ED30 with S3 brakes also! Mine is looking pretty similar, going to wash it tomorrow! Enjoy, much else planned with it?  :happy2:

Great car you have there - looks like it has factory Sat Nav too, with the sharkfin aerial set-up.
Looks like the previous owner was a bit of an enthusiast too, from the choice mods - does it have a ED30 plaque / build number already?

Correct. Yes the previous owner did these choice modiciations. I would have done the exact same so saved me a lot of money. It doesn't have a plaque I don't believe, I thought these were aftermarket ?

Such great brakes, I hear the standard ones are pretty crap ! Nothing planned, just a map and that's it. Will probably move onto an S3 in a year.

Looks like an awesome car, black is the best colour for mk5s I think  :happy2:

How do you find the noise the milltek makes?

With all those mods it's more than likely had a remap before, and highly likely it was Revo so you could ask them to "reinstall" the map - worth trying it on!! Especially if someone has already paid Revo to map THAT car  :happy2:

The plaques are issued by VW - just give VW Customer Services a call with your VIN number and if a plaque hasn't been sent to a previous owner, then they will be able to issue it to you   :happy2:

The previous owner did the mods and he didn't map it. The first owner was a company car. I'm doubting it's ever had one.

I think so too :) I'm usually an induction fan over exhaust, but this is very subtle, not loud at all. Literally stock noise. Then a nice tone when gunning it, will upload a crap windy video once I've got it off the goPro.

That's good to know man, I've always been an induction over exhaust noise it's good to know it's not too loud. Is it a res or non res one?

Not sure if it's res or non res, how can you tell ? Assuming by the sound it's resonated.

Im assuming he means me but no idea why?

I think the non res ones are pretty much just a straight pipe from the turbo back, though im not sure on the mk5's

t's been a while since I've said anything about the car. But there isn't a lot to say, it's a Golf and it's reliable as anything. Not a beat missed, although it goes through oil like my old Civic did.

Some stats for you:

Driven exactly 6k in it today.
Average 29.97 MPG
Best is 34 MPG
Worst 27.9 MPG

All the above are full tank to full tank.

It definitely needs a remap, but don't have a spare £500 to throw at an already working car when trying to buy a house.

I don't think i've ever taken pictures of it when it's clean, so went a bit mad today in-between working.

Great to hear you're enjoying the car - think I have realised where I have seen it before...wasn't this for sale at Volkswizard? Still, looks great all cleaned up

Oh, and yours isn't the only ED30 which uses oil - mine seems to as well. I'm not used to it, as my old 1.8t never needed a drop between services, even when modded with an S3/TT turbo! Guess I just need to be used to checking the oil more often on the mk5...

Thanks - yup, I cannot believe they made a special edition and it didn't come with xenons as standard. A bloody RenaultSport Clio 172 PH2 comes with them as standard.

Been a while since I updated this thread.

Anyway, put the car up for sale at the start of month but it didn't generate much interest, I put it down to the 90 odd k mileage and high asking price. Although I think it's worth every penny due to the spec. Reason for sale was because of R32 noise. I then realised after not much interest and the fact that I would be hard pushed to find the same spec as my current ED in R32 guise. So I decided to keep it and rejuvenate the love with a Revo map.

So I went to Northampton Motorsport today and got a Revo Stage 1. Great service and would definitely recommend them to anyone in and around Northampton.

They say it would be around 300bhp and 300 ft/lb - it certainly has picked up it's pace. Very happy with it. It could probably do with being AWD as you can feel it trying to spin up even in dry conditions. I need to stop using pauper fuel now and crack out the VPower as that's what it is mapped for.

Will see how the MPG side of things increases/decreases after a few weeks and using proper fuel.

Always good to hear of a rekindled love. Keep at it and it'll be worth it.

Using higher octane fuel should see higher fuel economy as it burns cooler and slower so the map adjusts for this and uses slightly less fuel so better economy. Of course, that's under normal driving, not hard down on the go faster pedal.

Well it's been a while since I've updated this thread and it's also probably been that long since I washed it.

Nothing has happened since last update apart from enjoying the car and I had a clutch fitted as the old one was on it's way out especially with over 300 torques shouting at it. Was changed by Midland VW. Great set of lads, would certainly recommend for any VW needs or even VAG.

So, this weekend I washed it.

The dirty bits:

Even that dirty the Edition 30 still looks good! Looks like a different car all cleaned up - would never guess it has 100k on it.
Good luck with the sale!

Well I accepted a deposit on Thursday and was collected today.

Was sad to see it go, really are brilliant cars.

I had an offer accepted on an 8P S3 last week but had to let it go as he had another buyer and I had to sell my car first, typically I sold mine a week later but oh well.

Probably going to buy a stop gap car this weekend as I need a car but will keep my search for an R32 or S3. It's a shame the S3 has such a premium, I really don't understand why, it's exactly the same as an ED30 bar the AWD yet commands a 5k premium, but hey.

Here's some final picture from Gti Spring Festival at Santa Pod the other week.

Again - it doesn't look like the miles it has covered!
Great final pics - thanks for sharing. Hope you find the S3 you want - 4WB & Wingbacks are the only reason I would sell my ED30, but as you say - £5k is a bit of a premium.
Good luck with the hunt, & hope to see your new car on here too
