Title: Cam Follower wear queries...
Post by: berg on December 11, 2013, 03:19:52 pm
Had the 'ole cam follower replaced as part of service yesterday.

Wear was apparent as the black coating had started to wear on the outside. On the inside, I cant remember what these look like ie should they be coated black on the inside too? If so, then you could see wear on the inside also. It has been on the car for over 10k but not sure exactly for how long.

Once wear is visible is there any data to say roughly how long you have got? Ie if I had chosen to put it back in the car could I expect problems within so many months/miles or would it purely be pot luck? Has anyone on here ever gone, "that will be ok for another 5k, pop it back in" and then come unstuck?

I wonder if there is a market for part worn cam followers

imo for the sake of a £25 part - is it really worth the risk???

Personally, I'd change it if it showed any signs of wear on inspection - especially at Stg2+ levels of tune   :happy2:

Oh yeah i totally agree, i would not even think about putting it back in. What I was getting at is, I wonder how long they last for ONCE wear is visible

I'd say that it will vary massively depending on the state of tune / HPFP etc.

Once its worn through the coating though, I don't think there is a massive amount of time left...
